The 2026 WNBA Finals between the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream continue to attract attention. Tied at two games apiece, the Atlanta-Golden State matchup seems evenly poised.
At the same time, a potentially thorny issue hangs over the WNBA Finals that could affect this series. A WNBA reporter has now shared her opinion about a potential fix, prompting a variety of reactions from fans.
The Dream have played the majority of their home games this season at Gateway Center Arena, which seats about 3,500. However, in the playoffs, the team has used the State Farm Arena, which seats around 17,000 people.
Game 6 is scheduled for Thursday in Atlanta, with the venue still to be decided. State Farm Arena is already booked that night for the Atlanta Hawks’ game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe feels that the WNBA should move the game to a bigger stage. “Problem solving…. Hear me out. Game 6 in Atlanta at Mercedes Benz? Could we pack that out ATL???? @WNBA,” she wrote on X.
Several social media users disagreed. Offering strong counters to even the mere suggestion of the venue change. “I respect yall but no… not a chance,” one user stated.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium does not currently list a public event for that night. However, many believe filling a stadium with a capacity far greater than State Farm Arena’s could pose a major hurdle for the Dream and the WNBA. “Lol they hardly packed the State Farm Arena lol,” one user interjected.
On balance, that criticism lacks context. Atlanta sold out State Farm Arena for Game 3 of the Finals, drawing 17,099 fans, after the team had limited capacity during its earlier playoff games.
“The WNBA is too much of a joke for this to happen,” sneered another user.
Regardless of how much the league succeeds, there will always be detractors, whether their objections are legitimate or contrived. A contingent of fans believe that Rowe’s comments, despite the attempt to be helpful, fall flat.
“Comments like this do the @WNBA such a disservice. Well that and the league not understanding scheduling, but come on,” a user retorted.
Essentially, basketball is an arena sport, especially when it’s the finals. If this were a one-off, that could work. However, a Finals series demands an arena.
Whoever wins Game 5 will be one game away from their first WNBA championship. If it’s the Dream, winning on their home floor could provide the motivation and backdrop to do so, without the cavernous expanse of a football stadium.
