Marquinhos is one of the few Paris Saint-Germain players who are able to attend the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London tonight. The club captain is currently injured, having come off during the win against Barcelona last week.
PSG are playing on Monday night against Olympique Lyonnais. Their game against Paulo Fonseca’s side was initially scheduled to take place on Sunday night. However, the game was moved to Monday night following a directive from the Paris Prefecture. It comes amid widespread protests. With Paris also hosting an NFL game on the Sunday, the Prefecture feared resources being spread too thin.
It is a similar situation to last year. Much of PSG’s squad missed the ceremony due to PSG’s game against Olympique de Marseille being rearranged to the Monday night. On that occasion, a storm in the Phocéen city was to blame. Ousmane Dembélé won the award on that occasion, and once again, he is available to attend due to injury.
The France international is one of nine PSG nominees for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The vast majority, of course, cannot attend. Marquinhos, also sidelined, could also attend tonight’s ceremony but will instead be in the stands for PSG-OL at the Parc des Princes, L’Équipe understands. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, meanwhile, will also miss the ceremony as he travels to Doha to undergo surgery on his ACL injury.
