The UCLA Bruins are having one of their best seasons this century during Bob Chesney’s first year in charge of the school. The West Coast school is ranked No. 7 with a perfect 7-0 record.
The turnaround from last year, when the Bruins went 3-9, has been stunning, leading to speculation about where Chesney will be next season.
Asked about being hired away from UCLA on Tuesday by a reporter, Chesney gave a roundabout answer, praising the school but not replying directly:
“I’ve said it before: This is the greatest place in the world to play football, and it’s the greatest place in the world to coach football.”
Fans reacted to his comments on X, with many seeing something fishy in his lack of commitment.
“He didn’t say he wouldn’t leave,” someone ventured.
Might it be an honest sentiment expressed by Chesney?
Others thought the comment hyperbolic.
On Saturday, the Bruins host Nevada (3-4) at home in the Rose Bowl. Next week, they play Minnesota (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) on the road, then Illinois (4-3, 2-2) at home, followed by Michigan (4-3, 1-3) in Ann Arbor. They close out their season playing against their next-door neighbors, the USC Trojans (6-2, 3-2), at the Rose Bowl on Nov. 28.
