'Really rough' reveal makes Will Alves more impressive but no case for Leicester City defence

The talking points as City were held to a 2-2 draw by Stevenage at King Power Stadium in League One

Sammy Braybrooke of Leicester City celebrates his first senior goal for the club

Leicester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Stevenage at King Power Stadium in League One.

The Foxes twice took the lead through Sammy Braybrooke and Kamari Doyle, but twice the visitors hit back.

Here are some of the talking points...

Where there’s Will, there’s a way

Will Alves was one of City’s best players, if not the best, as he teed up Sammy Braybrooke to score the opening goal and then whipped in a dangerous cross that fell to Kamari Doyle to put the Foxes back in front.

On top of his assists, he was a threat throughout.

And to make his performance even more impressive, manager Russell Martin revealed afterwards that the young winger was unwell on the eve of the match, throwing his involvement into major doubt.

“He was amazing. Unfortunately he had to come off, he’s not been very well,” said Martin.

“He did well to start the game, yesterday (Friday) we thought he was a big doubt. So he only did a little bit of training, went home and felt really rough, so he did brilliantly.” He really did.

Alves showed great composure to cut the ball back from the far post to Braybrooke to score, after a sweeping cross from Luke Thomas had flashed across the face of goal.

And he put in a brilliant cross that Stevenage goalkeeper Tommy Setford could only parry into the path of Doyle to score.

Martin assured everyone that Alves is now OK, which is good news for City given his importance.

No case for the defence

Where to begin? Martin’s frustration said it all.

“Alex has been amazing for us and he makes a mistake, that can happen,” he said, choosing not to be critical of Alex McCarthy after his error gifted Stevenage their first equaliser.

Both were terrible goals to concede, McCarthy spilling a cross into his penalty area as he collided with Caleb Okoli and the ball falling to Ben Broggio to score and then Thomas and Okoli both failing to get close enough to their opponents as Chem Campbell crossed for Tugra Turhan to fire past McCarthy from an acute angle on the edge of the six-yard box.

“We can’t accept conceding goals like that, we can’t,” added Martin.

“We kept two brilliant clean sheets in the last few games and we go and concede two today which are so avoidable.”

“The second goal is worse in my opinion, we can’t concede that,” he added.

‘We weren’t ruthless’

Martin said City weren’t ruthless enough at both ends of the pitch, but top scorer Emil Riis will likely still be wondering how he did not add to his City goals tally.

He could easily have walked off with a hat-trick and the match ball, notably striking the foot of the post in the first half and later seeing a powerful strike tipped over the crossbar by Setford.

John Lundstram, returning from suspension, also smashed a shot at goal that was tipped over the bar, although he also skied a chance from the edge of the penalty area in the second half, after Braybrooke had squared the ball to him.

So, Martin was right, City were wasteful, but they were also denied by some superb goalkeeping.

Braybrooke landmark

A first goal in almost the first minute.

Braybrooke took just 67 seconds to justify Martin’s decision to restore him to the team as he swept City 1-0 ahead from close range.

It was a landmark moment too, being the youngster’s first senior goal for the club. The first of many, you expect.

“I feel like it’s been coming,” he said. “I’ve been getting in good areas and to finally get a goal like that… Yeah, it’s a pretty easy one, but you’ve still got to score it.

“I’ve just been thinking ‘it’s going to come’, I’m more worried when the chances don’t come.

“I finally got my luck today and Will put one back across and it was an empty goal, so it’s good.”
