Tottenham Hotspur had an evening to savour as they beat Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday.
Spurs travelled across the capital off the back of their first Premier League win of the season against Coventry City and were by far the better side in the early stages. Omar Marmoush had a great early chance, but his tame effort was denied by Mike Penders. Jordan Henderson did no better at the other end when the ball found the Chelsea midfielder unmarked on the edge of the visitors’ box.
James Maddison’s rotten luck with injuries continues as he was forced off with an injury soon after the interval. But in Maddison’s absence, Tottenham kicked on to find the opener, albeit fortunately, when Penders inadvertently punched an in-swinging corner delivery from Mateus Fernandes into his own net.
Cole Palmer, already on a yellow card, made a late challenge on substitute Conor Gallagher, resulting in a second booking and a subsequent red card. Exploiting the home side’s numerical disadvantage and their structural collapse, Roberto De Zerbi’s side swiftly put the match entirely out of reach. Mathys Tel made a mazy run, skipping past challenges from two Chelsea players before firing in a strike from outside the box which beat Penders on the near post.
Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville was full of praise for Tottenham’s performance against Chelsea. He felt that Roberto De Zerbi’s side were “brilliant” and “outplayed” the Blues on the day. The Manchester United great also lauded Maddison for helping Spurs dominate Chelsea in the middle of the park in the first half.
“Tottenham outplayed Chelsea, Spurs were brilliant,” Gary Neville said on Sky Sports (h/t BBC Sport).
“None of us expected that today; after 10, 15 mins their confidence grew. James Maddison was part of that. Spurs just dominated, especially in midfield where they’ve invested so heavily; that felt like Robert De Zerbi’s project coming to life.
“A bad day for Chelsea.”

Heading into the London derby, several pundits predicted a routine Chelsea win over Tottenham. Historically, the Blues have dominated this fixture, especially at Stamford Bridge, and with the form both teams were in, it wasn’t surprising to see most not taking a punt on De Zerbi’s side.
However, massive credit to De Zerbi’s boys for putting in a sensational display from start to finish. Spurs were brilliant in and out of possession, stretched the Blues centrally and in wide areas and created plenty of opportunities. The frustration at the end of the first half was again the lack of goals to show for the dominance, but eventually, the hard work paid rich dividends.
The result also marked the North Londoners’ first Premier League win at Stamford Bridge since April 1, 2018, when they defeated Chelsea 3–1. For Xabi Alonso’s side, it caps off a disastrous derby performance where they were second to us in every department for the majority part of the game.
