Cristiano Ronaldo's career has been filled with Champions League triumphs, international records and individual awards. Yet, away from the goals and trophies, the Portuguese superstar has repeatedly made headlines for incidents that sparked debate across the football world.
From a moment that angered England supporters at the 2006 FIFA World Cup to his public disagreements with Manchester United and Portugal's coaching staff, Ronaldo's career has included several high-profile controversies. As he brings his 23-year international journey to an end, these incidents offer another perspective on his time in the spotlight.
Ronaldo's reputation among English football fans took a hit during the 2006 World Cup quarter-final between Portugal and England. His Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney was sent off after an altercation involving Portugal defender Ricardo Carvalho. Cameras then caught Ronaldo winking towards the Portuguese bench, prompting accusations that he had celebrated Rooney's dismissal.
Although Ronaldo's actions did not cause the red card, the footage became one of the tournament's most memorable talking points.
Years later, his personal conduct came under scrutiny again. In 2019, Ronaldo accepted a settlement in a Spanish tax fraud case involving undeclared image-rights income. The agreement included a suspended 23-month prison sentence and a financial penalty of approximately €18.8 million.
Another major controversy emerged in 2018, when Kathryn Mayorga accused Ronaldo of sexually assaulting her in Las Vegas in 2009. Ronaldo denied the allegation, and prosecutors declined to bring criminal charges, citing insufficient evidence. Mayorga's subsequent civil lawsuit was dismissed in 2022 because of misconduct by her lawyer. The dismissal was not a ruling on whether the alleged assault occurred.
In April 2022, Ronaldo faced criticism after an incident involving a young Everton supporter. Following Manchester United's defeat at Goodison Park, he knocked a mobile phone out of the supporter's hand while leaving the pitch. He apologised and later received a two-match suspension and a £50,000 fine from the Football Association.
A further incident occurred in Saudi Arabia in February 2024. After Al Nassr defeated Al Shabab, Ronaldo appeared to make an obscene gesture towards supporters chanting Lionel Messi's name. The Saudi football authorities handed him a one-match suspension and financial penalties.

Ronaldo's second spell at Manchester United ended amid considerable controversy in November 2022. In an interview with Piers Morgan, he criticised the club's leadership, questioned its infrastructure and openly expressed his lack of respect for manager Erik ten Hag. United subsequently announced that his contract had been terminated by mutual agreement.
More recently, reports of tensions with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus brought another chapter of controversy. Ronaldo expressed dissatisfaction over his playing time and the handling of his role in the national team, attracting attention during the final phase of his international career.
Ronaldo's international career ended with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal. He also helped the country win Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles.
His achievements have secured his place among football's most celebrated players. However, the controversies surrounding him demonstrate how his enormous influence has extended well beyond the pitch.
