Iga Swiatek will end 2026 as a one-time WTA champion after deciding to call it quits on her latest season in professional tennis.

Swiatek wants to “rest and recover” her body fully after another demanding campaign, during which she played 54 matches. The Polish superstar won 39 of those and lost 15. She is currently ninth in the WTA rankings.

The former world number one endured a difficult season, although she did enjoy a superb highlight by lifting the trophy in Toronto. That represents her 26th career title. And while there will be no more success for Swiatek in 2026, fans of the sport have welcomed her latest decision with open arms.

Happy that the 25-year-old is taking the time to fulfil her plans to rest and recover, one fan wrote on X, translated from Polish: “Finally. Iga’s been operating at such cosmic speeds for so many years now that it had to take a toll on her health and psyche. Calm, rest, and stress-free training could do a lot for Iga next year.”

A second concurred, saying: “And she’s right! A time for everything, taking care of oneself, regenerating, are important things, too often neglected!”

And a third agreed: “This is the best decision she could make and I support it fully. And I’m not even sad, because I feel she needs rest and her comeback will be epic next season. She showed us in recent months she’s just getting stronger. Can’t wait for 2027.”

Others in agreement wrote: “Nobody argues with a body that’s done. Fair call,” and “Iga gave us another memorable season. Hope she gets the rest she needs and comes back ready for more in 2027.”

And another fan commented: “What a heartbreaking end to a heartbreaking season, although I like to always see the positives in these things; more time to rest, recover and focus her mind to be ready to dominate the Tour next season, we live, we breathe, we move, always with you champ.”

Meanwhile, others have already looked ahead to what feats Swiatek could achieve next year. One wrote: “Time to rest and get back to the Top 4 in 2027,” and another said: “This is the right decision but it still hurts. I hope she rests well, recovers from the injury and is ready for next season and Australia because we have a career Slam to win.”

That may just be the goal for the WTA superstar, who has won every Grand Slam except the Australian Open. She has reached the semifinals but no further in Melbourne on two occasions. Elsewhere, the Pole boasts four French Open titles and one each at Wimbledon and the US Open. Men’s star Carlos Alcaraz completed the career Grand Slam at the tournament earlier this year, while his ATP rival Jannik Sinner needs only French Open success to join him.
