Worse than Tounekti: No one is talking about Celtic's 3/10 signing

Celtic have the chance to move seven points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table if they beat Falkirk away from home on Sunday afternoon.

The Hoops had a frustrating night on Wednesday, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Dundee United, but they maintained their four-point lead at the top, as Rangers only picked up a point against Hearts.

Whilst Martin O'Neill will be pleased that his team are in first place in the Premiership with two games before the international break, there are still some problems that need to be dealt with.

Sebastian Tounekti is one of those problems because he has not been included in any of the last three matchday squads in the league for the Hoops.

Why Celtic need to move on from Sebastian Tounekti

The Scottish giants need to move on from the Tunisia international when the January transfer window opens for business because he has not been good enough this season.

Tounekti has become surplus to requirements at Parkhead, as evidenced by his exclusion from the squad in the last three games, and he cannot have too many complaints over his situation.

The 24-year-old attacker featured in the first eight games of the Premiership season for Celtic, starting two of those matches, and did not register a single goal or assist.

In fact, his only goal and his only assist in 15 appearances in all competitions came in a 4-0 win away at Dundee United in the League Cup in August.

Celtic should, therefore, be looking to move on from him in January because he has not contributed enough on the pitch, and now looks to be out of O'Neill's rotation.

Worse than Tounekti: No one is talking about 3/10 Celtic signing

Tounekti, though, is not the only player in the first-team squad at Parkhead who has failed to make an impact in the final third in the 2026/27 campaign so far.

Another player who seems to be heading in the same direction as the Tunisian winger is Chelsea loanee Shim Mheuka, who joined on a season-long loan at the end of the summer transfer window.

The 19-year-old striker was an incredibly exciting loan signing for the club because he had scored 25 goals in 49 games for Chelsea's U21s and 16 goals in 27 matches for their U18s.

That excitement seemed justified when he came off the bench and scored against St Mirren, only for the goal to be chalked off by a controversial VAR decision, when they did not have a clear image to judge the offside.

Because of that moment against the Saints in just his second appearance for the Hoops, no one seems to be talking about how underwhelming he has been since then.

Mheuka has been even worse than Tounekti as an attacking force, as he has yet to produce a single goal or assist for the Scottish giants, and has struggled in his cameos in the league.

In seven appearances in the Premiership, including that outing against St Mirren, the England youth international has missed two 'big chances' and is yet to score his first goal for the club.

The 19-year-old attacker has failed to score a goal or provide an assist in any of his eight appearances for the Scottish giants in all competitions since his move to Parkhead.

Tounekt, meanwhile, has scored a goal and supplied an assist this season for the first-team, despite his woes, which suggests that he has been more effective than Mheuka.

The Chelsea loanee is looking like a 3/10 signing, at best, at the moment because he has not offered a viable alternative to Kasper Hogh or Camilo Duran in the striker role, due to his struggles when he has played.

Unless his form turns around and he proves that he can be a reliable performer when called upon by O'Neill, Celtic or Chelsea may have to terminate the loan early in January, so that he can go out and play regular games elsewhere.

Mheuka is a young player who is still learning and developing, so his career cannot be written off because of his time at Parkhead, but his time at Celtic so far has not been a success.
