The New Orleans Saints’ running back room keeps shuffling.
Alvin Kamara returned to practice Thursday, a day after resting for his back injury. But the group also had a new absence: C.J. Donaldson, the undrafted rookie who was limited Wednesday with a shoulder and a concussion. Donaldson had served as a pass-blocking back, though he has also rushed for 81 yards on 17 carries.
Donaldson first got injured in New Orleans’ Oct. 25 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team then had its bye week.
Coming off the bye, the Saints have made several efforts to jolt their struggling run game. Earlier this week, the Saints fired run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti. The team then claimed Audric Estime off waivers, bringing back the runner who was with them last season and throughout the preseason. The Saints initially waived Estime in September with an injury settlement and the veteran then spent stints with the Minnesota Vikings and the Cleveland Browns.
It is unclear which back the Saints plan on getting the bulk of the carries for Sunday’s game against the Browns. The Saints have Estime, Kamara, Donaldson and Kendre Miller — the latter of whom is the team’s leading rusher.
New Orleans also has Zamir White and Jacquez Hunter on the practice squad, while Travis Etienne — its big free agent addition — has been on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.
Elsewhere, Justin Reid (concussion) and Nathan Shepherd (illness) are off the report after being full participants the last two days. Rookie Jordyn Tyson (hamstring), tackle Kelvin Banks (ankle), tackle Asim Richards (thumb), cornerback Martin Emerson (shin) continued to be limited. Along with Donaldson, defensive tackle Davon Godchaux (rest) did not practice.
