JJ Smit and Jack Brassell starred with the ball to set up Namibia's five-wicket win in the fifth ODI against Ireland in Windhoek, helping the hosts clinch the series 3-2. Smit's 4-20 and Brassell's 3-15 were instrumental in Namibia restricting Ireland to 129. Louren Steenkamp's 46 and Gerhard Erasmus' 30 helped Namibia over the line despite some stutters in the chase as they got home in 21.2 overs for their first series win against a full-member nation.
Namibia made an excellent start with the ball, exploiting the assistance on offer for the pacers to keep Ireland in check. JJ Smit was particularly impressive with his line and length, while Ruben Trumpelmann provided the early breakthrough, dismissing Tim Tector for five in the second over. Ireland managed just 25/1 in the first 10 overs before Max Heingo struck with his first ball to remove Andrew Balbirnie for nine. Cade Carmichael and Harry Tector attempted to rebuild, but the scoring remained sluggish, with their 29-run stand ending when Jack Brassell bowled Carmichael for 27.
Lorcan Tucker briefly injected some urgency with two sixes in a quickfire 20 off 14 balls, but Ireland's innings unravelled spectacularly in the 23rd over. Smit returned to remove Tucker caught and bowled before trapping Curtis Campher and George Dockrell lbw in the space of four deliveries. Ireland slipped from 84/3 to 84/6, with Smit completing a three-wicket maiden to leave them in deep trouble.
Jordan Neill offered some resistance with a counterattacking 33 off 25 balls, striking four fours and a six, and added 28 runs with Gavin Hoey. However, Brassell trapped Neill lbw in the 30th over before Smit dismissed Hoey to claim his fourth wicket. Brassell then accounted for Jai Moondra to wrap up the innings in the 34th over as Ireland lost their last seven wickets for just 45 runs.
Namibia made a positive start to the chase with Louren Steenkamp leading the charge as he struck regular boundaries, and also a six off Neill. Michael van Lingen provided support from the other end with 15 before falling to Jai Moondra in the seventh over, caught brilliantly by Harry Tector at first slip. Steenkamp continued to find the boundaries, striking two fours off Moondra in the ninth over to take Namibia past 50.
Jan Frylinck joined the attack, striking two fours in the 10th over off Matthew Humphreys as Namibia reached 61/1. However, his outing was short-lived as Humphreys struck in his next over, getting Frylinck bowled with one that turned in sharply. Steenkamp was run out soon after, falling four short of fifty, as Ireland attempted a fightback.
Tector put down a tough catch in Humphreys' over to give Malan Kruger a reprieve. Erasmus then struck a four and a six off Gavin Hoey to take Namibia past 100 in the 17th over. He also hit two fours off Humphreys before the bowler hit back with the wicket of the Namibia captain, who was dismissed for an 18-ball 30. Kruger fell in the next over, handing a catch back to Hoey, with Namibia nine away from victory. Zane Green finished it off with a six in the 22nd over as Namibia picked up a comfortable win to seal the series.
Brief scores: Ireland 129 in 33.1 overs (Jordan Neill 33; JJ Smit 4-20, Jack Brassell 3-15) lost to Namibia 131/5 in 21.2 overs (Louren Steenkamp 46, Gerhard Erasmus 30; Matthew Humphreys 2-48) by 5 wickets.
