Scottie Scheffler is the undisputed best player in the world.
It’s a real shame, then, that the world number one very rarely showcases his talent outside of the States. Scheffler typically plays the Scottish Open as a warm-up to The Open Championship, but otherwise plays exclusively on the PGA Tour.
It’s a massive loss to the game that fans can’t see Scheffler play in Australia, South Africa, or Japan throughout the year, as they could with many of the old golfing greats like Tiger Woods.
Scheffler says he likes to spend the fall season, where many of the biggest international events are played, with his family. But this reasoning falls flat when you consider what he does for Woods every single year.
When it comes to major international events like the Spanish Open, Scheffler doesn’t want to leave the States. But for an unsanctioned PGA Tour event in the Bahamas with a 20-player field? Count him in!
Scheffler has played in Woods’ Hero World Challenge event in the Bahamas every year since 2022. He’s a two-time winner and has never finished outside of the top five, which isn’t much of a feat with only 20 players teeing it up.
So much for not wanting to play outside of the US. Yes, the Bahamas is just a short trip from Miami’s coast, but Scheffler lives in Texas. It’s still a sizeable journey.
Scheffler said he wants to protect this time of year so he can spend proper time with his family, which is, of course, a better reason than any to take time off. Scheffler works hard throughout the PGA Tour season, and he deserves some downtime just like anyone else.
We are already dreaming about Thursday at Augusta National!
But it’s a massive shame that the one event Scheffler breaks this time off for is so meaningless in the broader golfing landscape. The people of the Bahamas aren’t flocking to Albany to finally get a glimpse of their idol playing. It’s a glorified holiday.
Meanwhile, there are events all around the world that Scheffler could have a real impact on. Fans who don’t often see the best players on the planet play would give anything to watch Scheffler compete.
Woods understood this, Rory McIlroy understands this, but Scheffler hasn’t quite gotten his head around it. He doesn’t have a duty to play all over the world, but it’s a crying shame for the game of golf that the world number one doesn’t commit to playing some international golf.
