Filip Hrgovic is set to return to action for his first mandatory defence of the IBF heavyweight world title in early 2027, but has not ruled out revisiting his rivalry with Moses Itauma.
Itauma was expected continue his undefeated streak against Hrgovic to become the second-youngest heavyweight world champion in boxing history when they fought in August, but the 34-year-old underdog pulled off one of the upsets of the year as he claimed the vacant world title via ninth-round stoppage.
In the aftermath, Itauma made it clear that he wants a rematch with ‘El Animal’, but the 6’6” Zagreb-born operator instead looks poised for a fight on home soil, linked to a showdown with Cuba’s Frank Sanchez for what would be the first heavyweight world title fight to ever take place on Croatian soil.
If 21-year-old Itauma gets back to winning ways and lives up to the considerable expectations, a second meeting between the heavyweight duo looks likely down the line.
Speaking with Ring Magazine, Hrgovic revealed that he is willing to take on Itauma for a second time, but only after he becomes the undisputed heavyweight world champion.
“No, [they] never [asked for a rematch with me]. When I become undisputed [champion], I will give him a rematch.”
Should he defeat Sanchez, a unification rematch with Daniel Dubois looks like the target for Hrgovic. The winner will then target WBC champion Agit Kabayel to become a three-belt champion. The WBA super title is set to be on the line when Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua face off in December.
Meanwhile, Itauma is anticipated to make his ring return in January, as he looks to get back to re-announce himself as a serious threat to the heavyweight throne.
