Tottenham Hotspur finally have some wind in their sails with three straight victories after a six-game winless run in the Premier League. They are looking up and beginning to put their nightmare start to the season behind.
But while the three wins are definitely a huge lift for Spurs, the overall results this season have not been good enough, and so more consistent form is going to be required for Roberto De Zerbi to achieve his objectives this season. Despite spending close to £400million during the summer window, one position where the Lilywhites could do with more quality and competition is in attack.
A prolific goalscorer can propel them to European spots, and the North London outfit might get an opportunity in January to revisit a move for a striker they missed out on during the summer transfer window.
It was widely reported in the summer that Spurs had held talks with AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun. This happened on the back of his impressive showings at the 2026 World Cup, where the USA international found the back of the net three times in four games. The centre-forward was picked in the USA squad by Mauricio Pochettino after an impressive season with AS Monaco, which yielded 19 goals in all competitions.
However, Tottenham eventually chose against signing Folarin Balogun. The 25-year-old came close to joining Everton on transfer deadline day after Spurs cooled their interest, but the striker’s move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium also collapsed due to issues flagged during his medical.
Having stayed at Monaco, Balogun has not had many opportunities to showcase his talent this season. On Sunday, he made his longest appearance of the season, a full 45 minutes after being substituted on at halftime, and scored his first goal of the campaign. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a mere consolation as Monaco lost 3-1 to Paris FC.
Now, according to a report from TEAMtalk, Balogun’s entourage are now laying the groundwork for a January exit for the striker. After being left out of Monaco’s European squad altogether, the Brooklyn-born talent has thus asked his agent, Jorge Mendes, to find him a new club.
Mendes has already contacted several Premier League clubs over a January move for his client. The super-agent has approached Manchester United, Leeds United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest and Juventus over a potential move for the 25-year-old during the mid-season trading period.
A good run of form would go a long way for Balogun, as transfer rumours heat up ahead of his imminent January exit. Due to falling out of favour at the Principality Stadium this season under head coach Filipe Luis, the USMNT star’s stock has tumbled. As a result, Tottenham could have the opportunity to secure the signature of the striker for a reduced transfer fee.
Balogun will have just 18 months left on his deal in January, and this contractual situation leaves the Ligue 1 club vulnerable to losing value and could force them to take a financial hit on him. The former Arsenal academy graduate has proven his capability to deliver consistently at the highest level, and his displays at the summer’s World Cup further enhanced his reputation on the global stage.
A potential move for Balogun would carry an intriguing storyline given his history as a youth product at Arsenal. If Spurs does decide to revive their interest in the American talent, they’d face competition from several clubs across the Premier League and Europe monitoring his status.
