Former Tottenham Hotspur star Gus Poyet believes attack is the best plan for Roberto De Zerbi’s side at Chelsea on Saturday. Having played for both clubs and coached in N17, he knows how fast games at Stamford Bridge can turn. Spurs head to West London for the 5.30 pm kickoff fresh from beating Coventry City 3-1. Poyet wants the visitors to take that front-foot approach into the derby.
Speaking ahead of the weekend clash, Poyet acknowledged the threat posed by the home side forward line while pointing out a clear weakness for Spurs to target. He explained:
“I think Chelsea are showing the power they have in attacking areas.”
Poyet added: “As I said, they score goals for fun, so you need to be very well organised but, also, they are showing vulnerability at the back.”
Because the Blues have looked shaky at the back, Poyet insists Spurs must travel with a positive mindset. He said:
“So, you need to go thinking that you are going to score. Then, you have a chance.”
With James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski back fit after Monday’s win, Spurs have the tools to hurt the hosts. Sitting deep and soaking up pressure would only invite trouble.
Poyet made it clear that sitting back at Stamford Bridge is a recipe for defeat against such a dangerous attack. He said:
“For me, you cannot go and defend in this game.”

“This game is becoming bigger and bigger. I didn't have that feeling when I was at Chelsea, I have to be honest. Then it got bigger and bigger with the record, and then even bigger in Mauricio Pochettino’s time, with the fights! So,… pic.twitter.com/BMAikqGFFb
De Zerbi has built his name on brave football that tests opponents high up the pitch. Pairing that bold approach with a tight shape gives the Lilywhites their best path to three points.
With so much talent on both sides, Poyet expects an open contest on Saturday. He said:
“Then, like I said, it is a derby, everything that goes with that, the occasion, and I think it is going to be a beautiful game because of the quality of the players in both teams.”
If Spurs take their chances against Chelsea’s backline, the N17 faithful could celebrate a big away win. Kickoff is at 5.30 pm.
