Chelsea player ratings vs Liverpool as Morgan Rogers struggles and 3/10 dished out

Here are our Chelsea player ratings after the Blues' penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round stage

Morgan Rogers in action for Chelsea against Liverpool

Chelsea have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after Liverpool won a tense penalty shootout at Anfield.

After the tie finished 1-1, Wesley Fofana capped off a miserable evening for him on Merseyside by blazing his penalty over after a topsy-turvy shootout.

The Blues took the lead in the first-half when Morgan Rogers scored from the penalty spot after a foul from Ryan Gravenberch on Moises Caicedo. A few minutes later, though, Liverpool had a penalty, with Cody Gakpo converting following a handball from Fofana.

There were chances for both sides in the second period but neither team could find the winner, meaning we had a penalty shootout at Anfield.

It was a rollercoaster shootout but Fofana's wild effort means Liverpool go through and Chelsea are eliminated before the quarter-final stage.

Here are our Chelsea player ratings:

Mike Penders - He was clearly under instruction to go long as often as possible but it didn't really work from a Chelsea point of view. Apart from that, he made some crucial saves. A much better performance from the goalkeeper. Did well in the shootout. 7

Josh Acheampong - Up against his former Cobham colleague Rio Ngumoha, who looks like a genuine nightmare to defend against. Acheampong did well at times, but not always up against a very difficult opponent. Acheampong looked much better in the second-half, both in a defensive and attacking sense. 7

Maxence Lacroix - The Frenchman made a good recovery challenge on Cody Gakpo 10 minutes in after initially giving it away. Came off just before half-time with what looked to be a hamstring injury. 6

Wesley Fofana - Really silly penalty to give away. As a defender, your arms can't be up in the position they were. Improved as the game went on but the penalty means his rating is pretty low. Missed his penalty as well. 4

Malo Gusto - Very wasteful in possession at times. There was a point in the first-half where he gave away a corner so needlessly. He was outmuscled too easily on a couple of occasions. Overall, a poor performance from Gusto. 3

Moises Caicedo - Caicedo popped up in an unusual position and was rewarded for his run after a silly tackle from Gravenberch to gift Chelsea a penalty. 6

Romeo Lavia - Did well. A few times where he recovered the ball in potentially dangerous positions. 6

Jordan Henderson - Was on the receiving end of a few boos at Anfield. Had a lot to say to the referee. His energy was, as always, super impressive. 5

Pedro Neto - After a couple of good performances, Neto wasn't at his best against Liverpool. He went back to dribbling with his head down again and being wasteful in promising attacking situations. Scored his pen. 5

Morgan Rogers - Struggled to get into the game but was given the chance to open the scoring from 12 yards - and that he did. Great penalty. Really wasteful moment at the start when he looked to be through on goal but an awful touch killed the chance. Struggled in the second-half and made some poor decisions. 6

Danny Welbeck - Barely had a sniff. Not for a lack of trying, mind. Chelsea just couldn't get their No.9 in the game. 5

Substitutes

Levi Colwill (on for Lacroix 45') - Settled in quickly - and he had to. Passed it well from the back. Made a good block on Florian Wirtz late on. 6

Emmanuel Emegha (on for Welbeck 69') - Good to see him make his debut and he looked lively in his cameo. 7

Valentin Barco (on for Caicedo 69') - Added some energy in midfield and looked bright. 6

Marco Palestra (on for Gusto 69') - A lot of Chelsea fans think he should have started - and it's difficult to disagree with them. 6
