Tottenham Hotspur revamped their squad over the summer to bounce back from a disastrous 2025/26 season. This led to the club spending millions to bring in as many as 10 new faces, of which four turned out to be defenders.
Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Tosin Adarabioyo were signed, while the likes of Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Luka Vuskovic, Kevin Danso and Ashley Phillips were allowed to depart. Spurs also decided to secure the futures of some of their key players by handing them new contracts.
Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven extended their stays at the club by agreeing to lucrative new terms. Experienced defender Ben Davies also signed a new one-year contract until the end of next season. The 33-year-old’s deal was due to expire at the end of June, and he was set to leave the club, but the Lilywhites managed to convince him to stay.
Ben Davies is currently the club’s longest-serving player. Having joined from Swansea City in July 2014, the Wales international has gone on to make over 360 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 12 goals. He had surgery on a fractured ankle in January and was restricted to just three Premier League appearances last season, as Spurs narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship under Roberto De Zerbi.
The veteran defender remains an important figure behind the scenes at the club. As such, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Tottenham are planning to hold new contract talks with Davies, months after he penned a one-year extension.
The Welshman has scored in both of his competitive appearances since the start of this campaign. He came off the bench and scored in stoppage time against Coventry City on Monday evening. De Zerbi and Spurs are keen to see Davies stay as long as he is happy with his on-field role.
“If he’s contributing, I still think there’s a possibility that there could be a new deal. Both the club and the player will be happy to revisit things closer to the end of the season, to see if there’s a willingness from both parties to do a new one-year deal, which would suit everybody, it seems,” Pete O’Rourke said on the Transfer Insider podcast (h/t Football Insider).
“Davies has been a great servant to Tottenham, which is why he has stayed at the club for so long and obviously why they have been happy to give him one-year contracts.”
Davies is clearly past his prime but remains a valuable squad player. The Wales star’s ability to operate at both left-back and centre-back adds more value beyond his name. The Neath-born defender has been a key player for the club over the years, and Tottenham’s hierarchy views his experience and leadership qualities as key beyond the current campaign.
