As expected, Michal Postava got the call to rejoin the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.

When Detroit goalie John Gibson left Tuesday’s loss to Tampa Bay following the first period with a lower-body injury, it seemed only a matter of time until Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Postava would be summoned to the big club.

That time came late Wednesday afternoon, when the Red Wings made it official. Postava was recalled from the Griffins under emergency conditions. Detroit placed defenseman Albert Johansson on IR.

In a related move, the Griffins recalled goalie Carter Gylander from the ECHL Toledo Walleye. The Griffins are home Wednesday to face the Texas Stars.

On Tuesday, Postava was named the AHL Goaltender of the Month for October. Through five AHL games, Postava has a 5-0 record with a 1.20 GAA and a .955 save percentage. In the AHL rankings, he stands first in save percentage, second in GAA, and tied for first in wins.

Over his AHL career, Postava has never allowed more than three goals in any of his 30 regular-season games. He kept that streak intact in his first NHL start. Postava beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 in a shootout.

Postava was up with the big club then due to an injury to Daniil Tarasov.

Red Wings Like What They’ve Seen From Postava

Postava made such an impression on the Detroit brass last season with his consistent excellence that 2021 first-round pick Sebastian Cossa was dealt to the Utah Mammoth in the offseason.

“We’ve liked them all along, and he’s continued to work,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “The goaltending coaches are very confident in him, so are the players.”

The Czech puckstopper quickly won that confidence within the rest of the team.

“Maybe it’s the best way to start your career and go up against the best ones,” Red Wings forward Viktor Arvidsson said of Postava’s win at Edmonton. “But he held the job and shut them out in the shootout, and it was fun to watch.”

Gylander has proven equally impressive whenever he’s been summoned to the Griffins. The third-year pro made 24 saves during his season debut with Grand Rapids on October 24 against Cleveland, earning his 50th pro win in a 5-2 decision.

Gylander is now on a 10-game point streak with the Griffins (9-0-1), dating back to December 7, 2024. Last season, he went 7-0-1 with Grand Rapids with a 1.62 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage in eight appearances.

Throughout his three-year AHL career, the 25-year-old is 10-1-1 with one shutout, a 2.14 GAA, and a .926 save percentage in 12 games.
