Jürgen Klopp has named his 24-man Germany squad for the final two UEFA Nations League group matches, and while there are plenty of exciting young faces, there are also some notable omissions that will undoubtedly generate discussion.

The biggest takeaway is that Klopp is beginning to narrow his options. After experimenting with 44 players during his first international window, he has made some difficult decisions, rewarding certain players while leaving several established names and in-form prospects at home.

Here are some of the most interesting decisions from the announcement.

Biggest Omissions

This is arguably one of the biggest surprises. Raum has been a regular presence in Germany squads and offers experience, attacking quality, and an excellent delivery from the left side. His omission suggests Klopp is willing to rethink his fullback hierarchy rather than automatically relying on established internationals.

Schade is a notable omission considering his pace, versatility, and ability to stretch opposing defenses. The Brentford winger was included in Klopp’s original 44-player selection and featured in Germany’s opening Nations League matches. Leaving him out of the November squad suggests Klopp wants to evaluate other attacking options, particularly with Niclas Füllkrug returning and several younger players getting opportunities. Schade will undoubtedly feel he has unfinished business with the national team. There seemed to be a push for Schade to be a part of Germany, but he did not do enough during the last international break to cement his position.

Karim Adeyemi – FC Barcelona

Adeyemi’s omission is arguably one of the more surprising decisions. The Barcelona attacker was part of Klopp’s initial Germany squad and even started against the Netherlands, but has been left out of the latest selection. His pace and ability to create problems in transition make him an interesting option, particularly against opponents who defend high up the pitch. However, his recent lack of end product has not helped his case, with four goals and two assists in 14 appearances this season. Klopp has opted for other attacking profiles this time around.

Biggest Surprises

Niclas Füllkrug – Werder Bremen

The biggest surprise, and arguably the easiest selection to justify. Füllkrug returns to the national team after an outstanding start to the season, leading the Bundesliga scoring charts with nine goals in eight appearances. At 33, he is not necessarily part of Germany’s long-term future, but his experience, physical presence, and goalscoring instincts could be extremely valuable.

Wael Mohya – Borussia Mönchengladbach

Mohya is perhaps the most exciting surprise for the future. The young Gladbach midfielder receives his first senior Germany call-up after representing the country at the U21 level. Klopp clearly sees something worth developing, and this is exactly the sort of opportunity that makes his willingness to promote young players interesting.

Finn Jeltsch – VfB Stuttgart

Jeltsch is another exciting young defensive prospect receiving an opportunity. The Stuttgart defender has already impressed in Germany’s youth setup, and Klopp is giving him a chance to make the jump to senior international football. His inclusion is another indication that Germany’s new manager is serious about developing the next generation.

It should be noted that VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller and Josha Vagnoman are also absent, but both are reportedly unavailable through injury rather than being straightforward selection omissions.

The biggest question — did Klopp get the balance right? Leaving out Raum while bringing in several young prospects is certainly a statement, while Füllkrug’s return gives Germany a proven goal scorer.

There is still a strong willingness to give players such as Mohya, Jeltsch, Gruda, and Lennart Karl opportunities. Germany needs to build its next generation, but it also needs results immediately.

The November fixtures against Serbia and the Netherlands will tell us a lot about which of these decisions were the right ones.
