Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey offer under-fire Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle a boost ahead of Sunday’s Premier League trip to Crystal Palace but Sean Steur may be overlooked again.
Though these are early days in the 38-year-old’s tenure, Jaissle is struggling to convince as Newcastle United manager and the team were booed off following their defeat to Aston Villa last weekend. The Magpies desperately need a result, so the potential returns of both Elanga and Ramsey are big boosts.

What changes would you make to this predicted Newcastle XI vs Crystal Palace? 👀
While Elanga has struggled since signing for Newcastle for £55m in 2025, the Sweden international did at least start this season well, scoring against both Liverpool and Tottenham. Elanga has missed Newcastle‘s last four games but could return to the match day squad for Sunday’s trip to Selhurst Park, although he is unlikely to start.
Jaissle said: “Anthony has trained this week and worked really hard. He won’t be able to play 90 minutes but he is hopefully ready, at least, to be able to join the squad.”
Ramsey has also been ruled out through injury since scoring a late equaliser against Bournemouth in early September but could return here.
Newcastle United predicted XI vs Crystal Palace: Horniceck; Miley, Thiaw, Botman, Hall; Gonzalez, Joelinton; Murphy, Wissa, Barnes, Fernandez-Pardo
Summer signing Steur has impressed when called upon this season but the Dutch teenager has not played a minute since starring against Hull before the international break. Jaissle was asked about the midfielder during his pre-match press conference and while he did praise Steur’s supreme talents, the Magpies boss appeared to hint as if he would not be rushed back into the fold any time soon given his lack of experience.
He said: “We are all sure, the whole club, the coaching staff and the players what great potential Sean has. He has shown that already and he showed, like many other lads, there are ups and downs and this is normal. Now it is time he is getting that confidence, that maturity throughout training sessions, training weeks and we see it as a long-term project.”
That does feel like a shame. Anyone who has watched Newcastle this season would surely have noticed that Steur boasts a rare trait among the club’s midfielders, such is his ability to keep the ball. Too often, Newcastle lose it, cede possession and put their defence under pressure.
