The 2027 TGL season is set to start at the end of December, but the first two matches will fight for viewership against the United States’ largest head-turner.
When Brooks Koepka's Motor City squad clashes with Rory McIlroy's Boston Common team, the matchup will go head-to-head with four slate-opening NFL games in the Browns vs. Ravens, Chargers vs. Dolphins, Patriots vs. Jets, and Cardinals vs. Saints on Dec. 27th.
To make matters even more questionable, a possible Tiger Woods return follows the Koepka and McIlroy face-off as Jupiter Links takes on the Los Angeles Golf Club at 3 p.m. ET.
The Sunday night football game on Dec. 27 features the Jacksonville Jaguars visiting the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
According to Sports Media Watch, NFL viewership is up two to four percent season-to-date through week six of the 2026 regular season, averaging roughly 18.5 million to 20.2 million viewers per game, depending on the exact window.
By comparison, the season two TGL finals, where Woods made his competitive return, served as the league's most-watched broadcast of the year and its second-highest overall across two seasons.
TGL rosters have expanded to five for this season
The March 24 championship match saw Los Angeles Golf Club secure a win over Jupiter Links, attracting an average of 989,000 viewers, which was a 78 percent increase over the season one finals between Atlanta Drive and New York Golf Club.
TGL Broadcast coverage on ESPN topped 1 million viewers from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., peaking at 1.15 million average viewers per minute.
Overall viewership for TGL's second season reached 21.782 million, reflecting an eight percent gain compared to season one’s 20.215 million, despite Woods being sidelined while recovering from back surgery.
Woods is expected to return to golf when TGL begins
Speaking on the Fore Play podcast, four-time PGA Tour winner Kevin Kisner said he believes Woods could be looking at a full comeback, as the 15-time major champion hasn’t played a competitive tournament since the 2024 Open Championship.
“Tiger wants to play, and they wanted to sign Keith Mitchell, which is totally fine with me,” Kisner said on the podcast.
“Rob (McNamara], Tiger’s guy, he texted me a long text last week. Just telling me what they did on their decisions, how they were moving around, and what players were going to do, and that Tiger wanted to play a full schedule.”
The TGL season runs from Dec. 27, 2026, through Feb. 23, 2027. The NFL season will also run through the majority of TGL, with the Super Bowl scheduled for Feb. 14, 2027.
