India’s hopes of reaching the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) final suffered a setback after South Africa defeated Australia by 176 runs in Cape Town. Shubman Gill’s team moved to fourth place in the standings but they have little room for error in their remaining seven Tests.
India are currently fourth with 68 points and a points percentage (PCT) of 51.52 after playing 11 matches. They have two away Tests against New Zealand, followed by a five-match home series against Australia. The team need a strong finish to remain in contention for a place in the final.
According to reports, winning both upcoming Tests against New Zealand would take Team India's PCT to 58.97. However, losing both matches would bring it down to 43.59, leaving them with a difficult task in the remaining five Tests against Australia.
If they lose both New Zealand Tests, a 5-0 home series sweep against Australia would take their PCT only to 59.26. This could leave their qualification hopes dependent on results involving other teams.
Winning all seven remaining matches would raise the team's PCT to 70.37 and put them in strong contention for a place in the final. Six victories would take them to 64.81, while two or more defeats would make qualification considerably harder.
Only the top two teams qualify for the WTC final, so Gill and his teammates cannot afford to drop many more points. They must win their remaining matches and hope that the teams above them lose points during the rest of the cycle.
South Africa secured a 2-1 series victory over Australia after winning the third Test in Cape Town by 176 runs. Temba Bavuma's side bounced back from a 214-run defeat in the opening match in Durban and won the final two Tests to claim the series.
South Africa defended a target of 288 on the fifth day at Newlands and bowled Australia out for just 111. Simon Harmer took six wickets for 16 runs, while Kagiso Rabada claimed three for 39 to seal the victory.
South Africa collected 24 points from their final two Tests against Australia. They moved to second place in the standings with a PCT of 71.42. Australia, meanwhile, dropped from first to third after their percentage fell from 75 to 69.23.
New Zealand moved to the top of the standings with a PCT of 72.22 and 52 points from six Tests. The team climbed to fourth after Bangladesh lost to the West Indies in Mirpur and slipped to fifth. New Zealand, South Africa and Australia occupy the top three positions.
The Indian side have seven Tests left in the 2025-27 WTC cycle. They will first travel to New Zealand for a two-match series before hosting Australia for five Tests. Both assignments will play a major role in determining whether they can finish among the top two teams.
Their away series against New Zealand begins in Wellington on November 19, 2026. The second Test will take place in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1. The team will have two important opportunities to improve its points percentage before returning home.
Team India will then host Australia for a five-match series, beginning in Nagpur on January 21, 2027. The remaining Tests will take place in Chennai, Guwahati, Ranchi and Ahmedabad, with the final match scheduled to end on March 3.
