Jake Paul wasted little time putting himself in the conversation after Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez returned to winning ways against Christian Mbilli.
Alvarez claimed a unanimous decision victory in Riyadh, seeing him regain the WBC super middleweight crown he had lost 13 months ago against Terence Crawford.
The 36-year-old was impressive, proving too slick for the unbeaten Mbilli to handle, as the judges scored it 115-112, 116-111, and 117-110 in his favour.
Afterwards, the Mexican, one of the top male boxers of the 21st century, stopped short of stating who he would want to fight next, with his main priority rest.
"I'm going to rest. I'm going to keep learning. I'm going to keep working hard. And right now I'm going to be a couple of weeks off and then come back," he said.
That did not stop Paul coming up with a pitch for him, though.
Jake Paul made his boxing debut back in 2018 against Deji Olataunji, younger brother of KSI, winning by TKO in the fifth. From there, he continued to face off against other fellow social media stars before stepping up to face former MMA fighters in the shape of Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley, both former welterweight champions of ONE and the UFC respectively. He also defeated Anderson Silva by decision as he continued his climb up the boxing world.
His first loss came against Tommy Fury, despite Paul knocking Fury down in the eighth and final round, before he returned to MMA fighters and got back to winning ways against Nate Diaz.
Since October 2023, Paul has started to face professional boxers, including the legendary Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, before Anthony Joshua knocked him out back in December 2025 - the last time he stepped into the ring.
Unsurprisingly, though, that has not dulled his desire to continue to mix it with some of the best, having named a 13-man fight wish list after being cleared to return to boxing.
"Out of the ring for 13 months but still the same old Canelo. Respect," he wrote on X. "Did take a lot of punches though. We will dance, my friend, we will dance."
Paul's desire to fight Canelo has been longstanding, with the American chasing the fight since 2021, when he was just 3-0.
"I want to go after Canelo in three years. I want to be a world champion," he told Sky Sports at the time. He has continued to call the Mexican out in the years since, even claiming that as Canelo approaches the end of his career, the financial rewards of a fight between two of the richest boxers in history would be plentiful.
It reportedly even came close back in early 2025, only for Canelo to sign a multi-fight agreement with Turki Alashikh and Riyadh Season instead.
"We were on the 1-yard line, and we threw a pick-6," said Paul at the time, using an NFL analogy. Canelo himself has suggested he would be interested, but only once he retires, calling it more of an "event than a fight."
Still, that has not stopped Paul from continuing to chase it - much to the chagrin of those on social media.
"Try flexing your jaw bone bozo," wrote one fan, alluding to the fact AJ broke Paul's jaw in their fight. Many fans also opted to include gifs of the knockout blow delivered by Joshua in that fight as their main method of response.
"When he's 48 years old, yeah," said another, in reference to Paul mostly facing off against fighters who had been long past their prime like Tyson, one of the greatest boxers in history, and Silva. It was another theme across the replies, with the age in question varying from late 40s through to 60 plus. One even asked if he was waiting for Canelo's 70th birthday.
Others were a little more to the point in their replies, with @Typhoon43 simply calling it "absolutely laughable" that Paul was trying to put himself in the orbit of Canelo,
Whether the fight against Canelo ever materialises remains to be seen, but Paul is set to return to the ring in December. He is set to headline a card in Dubai on Christmas Eve, though, his opponent is yet to be revealed.
"We've got plenty of names on the list; let's see who signs the contract. Merry Christmas, Dubai. Santa Paul is coming to town, and somebody's getting knocked out," he has said.
