Bill Belichick's postgame news conference after North Carolina's devastating 31-30 overtime loss to Syracuse on Saturday, Oct. 24, barely lasted over three minutes.
The legendary former NFL coach was even more short-winded than usual after the Tar Heels' loss, which broke an 11-game conference losing streak for the Orange. Syracuse's last conference win was against Clemson on Sept. 20, 2025.
"Not much to say about this one," Belichick said after the game. "They made a couple more plays than we did today and it was the difference in the game. Hard-fought game, just like all the other ones we’ve seen Syracuse play. Just came up a little bit short.”
The loss could have major ramifications regarding North Carolina's bowl eligibility this season. With remaining games against Miami, Connecticut, Louisville, Virginia and NC State, it's feasible for the Tar Heels to miss a bowl game for the second consecutive season under Belichick, who's being paid over $10 million per season.
The way in which North Carolina lost is even more concerning. It held a 20-10 lead midway through the third quarter, but was outscored 21-10 the rest of the game before going to overtime, where Syracuse won on a game-winning 2-point conversion.
“I don’t think anything’s holding us back,” UNC receiver Jordan Shipp said after the game. “I think we’re holding ourselves back.”
Awaiting Belichick and the Tar Heels is a bout with No. 1 Miami, which could sting even worse after a loss to conference bottom-feeder Syracuse.
