Newcastle miss major opportunity as Everton pair make recruitment team wince - 5 things

Five things we learned from Newcastle's 3-1 defeat at Everton in the Carabao Cup fourth round

Newcastle United exited the Carabao Cup at the fourth round stage on Thursday evening with a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry sealed a comfortable win for David Moyes' side who booked themselves a favourable quarter-final tie against League Two outfit, Fleetwood Town.

But Newcastle were left to lick their wounds as the positive momentum garnered from Sunday's 2-0 win at Crystal Palace was quickly sucked out of them on Merseyside, despite a consolation goal from Dan Burn, who headed home from Joe Willock's cross late on.

Newcastle will return to Premier League action on Monday when they take on Everton again at St James' Park and for the third home game in a row, Matthias Jaissle will be looking for a positive response to a defeat from his side.

Here are five things we learned from a bruising evening in the North West.

Opportunity missed

There was excitement on Wednesday evening when the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw saw the winners of Thursday's clash between the Toffees and the Magpies handed an away trip to face League Two side Fleetwood Town.

It presented both teams with a major opportunity to bank a place in the semi-finals of a competition that Newcastle have a rich recent history in but it was Everton who seized that opportunity, rather than Newcastle.

Newcastle were incredibly wasteful in front of goal and were far too charitable in defending their own and if you aren't good enough in both boxes you largely get what you deserve. Everton will now fancy their chances of cup glory. United will reflect on an opportunity missed before having another crack at the FA Cup in January.

Transfer targets haunt Newcastle

In the last 12 months, Newcastle's recruitment team have monitored both Garner and Hackney and on another night where the Magpies' summer transfer business can be called into question, there was an irony that both players scored for the Toffees against United.

Amar Dedic's error saw Garner profit as he whipped the opening goal past Lukas Hornicek, while Hackney couldn't miss when he got on the end of Barry's cross to double their advantage.

Newcastle's interest in both players pre-dated Jaissle but Newcastle were keen on Garner before he penned a new contract at Everton, while Hackney had the pick of a number of Premier League clubs when leaving Middlesbrough in the summer. Everton will be glad they are on Merseyside, rather than Tyneside.

Murrayfield yardstick makes for grim reading

Newcastle were beaten by Everton at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh in pre-season but that game was one week into Jaissle's reign and in the midst of a chaotic summer where he had taken over from Eddie Howe three weeks before the start of the season and the club were still three signings away from completing their business.

The Toffees ran out 3-1 winners that night and Thursday felt like a decent yardstick for progress made under Jaissle in the two-and-a-half months that followed.

Yet, Newcastle lost 3-1 again and similar themes continue to surround his team's performances. Chaotic, unsustainable, inconsistent.

Stats say it all

Newcastle were arguably the better team between both boxes but, unfortunately for them, games are won in the boxes and Jaissle's side were not great in either.

United had 26 shots on goal and created so many good chances, particularly in the first half, that they did not take. By contrast, Everton had 15 shots less than Jaissle's side, and only five of them were on target.

They scored from three of them, though, and it is that ruthless streak Newcastle are missing this season, while the defending for all three goals was unacceptable.

Unless that improves, the rest of the discussion about systems and tactics is immaterial and it could require Newcastle to dip into the January transfer market when they, ideally, had not planned to.

Ramsey return short-lived

Jacob Ramsey made his first start in midfield for the first time since the third round win over Millwall after recovering from injury. Jaissle hailed his 'professionalism' in his pre-match interview and there was much intrigue to see how he would fare alongside Nico Gonzalez.

"He is able to start and if he is making the 90 minutes, we will need to see but that is normal," Jaissle told Sky Sports. "He did an unbelievable rehab, really showed professionalism and now we count on him today."

But he was one of three players hooked at half-time as Jaissle looked to get back into the game and if he was hoping to rip the shirt from Joelinton in the centre of midfield then his plan did not pay off.
