The New York Giants announced on Saturday that safety Jevon Holland and tight end Theo Johnson have been downgraded to out for Sunday’s Week 7 game against the Houston Texans.
Holland, who had been listed as questionable with a concussion, entered the league’s protocol following last week’s 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. He was limited in practice Thursday and Friday, but did not clear the necessary steps to play.
Johnson, previously doubtful with a neck injury, did not travel with the team to Houston.
The losses add to a depleted Giants defense that will also be without linebacker Tremaine Edmunds and cornerback Greg Newsome.
Holland has emerged as a key contributor this season, recording three interceptions while grading among the league’s better safeties. His absence will require a rotation of Jason Pinnock, Tyler Nubin, and Ar’Darius Washington in the secondary.
Nubin remains questionable with a neck injury of his own.
Offensively, Johnson’s absence thins the tight end group behind Isaiah Likely, who has handled a primary role in the passing game.
The Giants enter the road contest at 3-2-1, seeking a rebound before their Week 8 bye. The extra week should provide recovery time for both Holland and Johnson, who are expected to miss only this game barring further complications.
