Lewis Hamilton’s Friday at the Circuit of the Americas concluded with a disappointing sixth place in both Free Practice sessions, highlighting a day of struggles for the seven-time world champion. The Englishman finished 0.503 seconds behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc in the morning and fell further back by 0.615 seconds in the afternoon session, underscoring his discomfort on the demanding Texas track.
Despite Ferrari’s introduction of aerodynamic upgrades to the SF-26, Hamilton was unable to find the optimal balance on his car. The British driver openly acknowledged the difficulties faced throughout the day, revealing that he experimented with a different setup in an effort to improve performance. “It was not an easy day: we tried a different setup direction, but I didn’t feel comfortable with the car, especially over the bumps,” Hamilton explained. He added a note of optimism by pointing to Leclerc’s pace as proof that the car’s potential is there. “Charles has shown that the performance is present, so we need to understand how to best dial in my SF-26.”
Hamilton is banking on the team’s data analysis and overnight work to unlock the car’s true capabilities ahead of Free Practice 3 and qualifying. “Free practice is always a great opportunity to try new things and deepen our understanding of the package we have,” he said. “Tonight, we will work to analyse what we gathered today and see where we can improve for tomorrow.”
The reigning world champion’s candid assessment underlines the challenge Ferrari faces in extracting consistent performance from their upgraded machinery. Hamilton’s discomfort on the circuit’s surface and the unproven setup strategy have left him searching for answers as the weekend progresses.
