‘Getting Exhausting,’ ‘He’s 100% Right’ – Fans Divided Over 76ers Star Jaylen Brown’s Claim That NBA Awards Are ‘Made Up’

Jaylen Brown has won some of the NBA’s biggest individual honors, including the 2024 Finals MVP award, but he is not convinced those awards deserve the attention they receive. The Philadelphia 76ers forward recently questioned the value of individual recognition, calling NBA awards “made up” and arguing that players should not let outside validation determine their happiness.

His comments have split basketball fans. While some agreed with Brown’s perspective, others were quick to bring up his own frustration after missing out on an individual award last season.

NBA Fans Debate Jaylen Brown’s Take on Individual Awards

Brown shared his thoughts during an appearance on The Young Man & The Three podcast on Thursday, where he joined actor Daniel Radcliffe and host Tommy Alter. The 76ers star questioned the credibility of the voting process and suggested that the criteria for several NBA awards are not clearly defined.

“All the awards that people chase, all the outside validation it doesn’t even matter. It’s made up,” Brown explained. “You know, somebody made up an award and made up a fake committee to give people these awards based upon what criteria? Nobody actually really knows.”

However, Brown acknowledged why players value such recognition. His concern is that players begin tying their personal happiness and identity to those achievements.

“It feels great to be validated because it gives a platform and an opportunity to have a bigger voice or to be rewarded for your hard work over the course of how many years. I understand that. I know people want that,” the 76ers star reasoned.

“But at the same time, if you wrap your identity in that, you will never be happy, and I won’t let anybody or anything control my happiness.”

Brown’s comments drew some support, with one fan arguing, “He’s 100% right, and it’s also why the establishment hates him. If you ask the people who vote for MVP what’s their criteria for the award, you’d probably get 20+ different answers.”

Others, however, were quick to question Brown’s take.

“This dude is getting exhausting,” one NBA fan joked.

Brown had previously expressed disappointment after missing out on the December 2025 Eastern Conference Player of the Month honor, which went to Jalen Brunson. Brown reacted to the snub on X with a brief “Smh,” signaling his disapproval.

One NBA observer brought that incident up, quipping, “This is the same guy who whined because he didn’t get player of the month last year by the way.”

The criticism did not stop there. One X user took a dig at Brown, writing, “The more he talks and the more clips I see of him, the more i understand why they traded him.”

“Whatever you say man LMFAOOOO,” one fan responded, simply dismissing his argument.

Another took his comments to their logical extreme, asking, “Exactly. The FMVP is fake then.”

That reaction carries an interesting twist, considering Brown won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP after helping the Boston Celtics capture the championship. He also earned Eastern Conference Finals MVP honors that year.

Brown has begun a new chapter in Philadelphia after being traded in July following a decade in Boston. The Sixers have opened the season 4-1, with the forward averaging 20.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Whether the former Boston Celtics forward values awards or not, the 76ers will surely want Brown to deliver MVP-level production this year to end their four-decade-long championship drought.
