Lewis Ferguson has never been too far off speculation surrounding Rangers. He has now opened up about a possible return to Scotland.
The midfielder has been a key player at Bologna for several years. He has played ten times in the Serie A in the ongoing campaign, captaining them a majority of times.
Ferguson has now featured for close to 150 games and despite a serious knee injury two seasons ago, his prominence never reduced.
Reports in Scotland have constantly spoken of Rangers interest in the player. A part of it has been because of his family roots to the Ibrox club, which has been a point of discussion once again.
The Scotsman spoke to Gazzetta dello Sport in a detailed interview and was asked about a range of topics at Bologna and relating to his career.
When specifically asked about Rangers and a move to the Glasgow side, he said that a transfer will happen at some point.
Kairat Almaty 0-0 Celtic (3-2 on penalties): Brendan Rodgers press conference
He said: “Rangers? Let’s just say I’ll go there sooner or later; I know it’ll happen someday. The rest is today: now we’ve recovered and we have to take advantage of the momentum.”
The midfielder is proud of his leadership role at Bologna.
“Let’s say we’re a team of captains. There’s me, there’s Orsolini, and there’s the captain of captains, Lollo De Silvestri: he’s amazing in terms of his passion. He doesn’t play much, but this, the way he is, sets an example. He organizes, manages, speaks, helps.”
Ferguson was also asked about makes him and other Scottish footballers succeed in Italy.
“Because we are reliable, serious and have a like-minded mindset.”
Ferguson’s valuation is currently high and it is expected to remain there for a while. At 27, he is also at the peak of his powers and Bologna could return to Europe soon.
Moreover, his current deal runs out in the summer of 2028. Bologna also have the option to extend it by another season, which will make things more complex for Rangers.
For now, the player remains unaffordable. Considering the constant push in Scotland and his uncle – Barry Ferguson’s connection with the club, a move will be inevitable when the money is right.
