Hearts player ratings as duo suffer costly defensive errors

Seriously let down by the players in front of him as he was helpless to avoid picking the ball out of his net on three occasions. Had made a handful of simple stops before being stumped by Jamie McCart's inexplicable own goal, and given no chance after Stephen Kingley teed up Thun for a second. The third was by him in a flash. Scoreline could have been worse if not for the keeper.

Stephen Kingsley 3

Shoehorned in at right-back due to Hearts' incredible misfortune with injuries. But gifted away the second goal as he only prodded into the path of Brighton Labeau, who slammed into net. Perhaps a natural right-footed player would have cleared easily, but no excuse for this mistake by an experienced player. Night only worsened by a suspected hamstring injury which forced him off.

Stuart Findlay 5

Took a forearm to the jaw from Furkan Dursun in the first-half, for which the forward was only booked. Was then badly outmuscled by the forward who poked home a third for the hosts in Switzerland after getting in front of the defender. Centre-back did give travelling 2,000 Hearts fans something to cheer with terrific header into the bottom corner after rising highest at the backpost to net a consolation.

Malachi Fagan-Walcott 5

Was so close to scoring for Hearts in Trabzon last time out in this competition and was denied a headed goal again here, with Niklas Steffen producing a terrific low save to his left. Wasn't dominant or convincing enough in the rearguard for Hearts but that is criticism which can be levelled at the whole defence.

Jamie McCart 3

Another player forced into an uncomfortable position owing to the injury situation as he slotted into left back. Had started okay but came undone by a comical own goal as he got his feet mixed up and inadvertently diverted the ball into the bottom corner - had done well in rescuing his positioning before the horror blunder. Like Hearts, never truly recovered.

Jordi Altena 5

Drafted into midfield again and was one of the better performers in there, or at least one of the most involved. Carried a threat with his deliveries from set-pieces, resulting in a consolation from Stuart Findlay. He was industrious but not always the most effective in duels in midfield with Hearts overrun by the hosts.

Josh McPake 5

One of few Hearts players who looked like doing something going forward. After 20 minutes he showed his ability as he cut inside to the edge of the box before unleashing a fierce strike to force a save. But he was too often neglected by his team-mates who moved the ball across the park instead of repeatedly shovelling to McPake who had the beating of his man.

Sabri Guendouz 5

Looked lively in the opening exchanges with some nice touches but his impact waned. He wasn't able to penetrate the Thun defence in his passing and was understandably frustrated when his press wasn't backed up by his team-mates in charging out from the back.

Laurent Mendy 4

Hearts are a better team when Mendy is heavily involved in his all-action style, but that was missing against Thun. He cut a tired figure in the midfield and wasn't able to really dictate any play or take charge of the midfield battle as he was bypassed regularly by Thun.

Sabah Kerjota 4

A frustrating watch against Thun as he looked to pose a threat but could never really make it count. Often found in space and tasked with driving at the defence but his touch was slack on a handful of occasions and he was totally dominated by the impressive Olivier Mambwa who gave him very little room to do anything.

Claudio Braga 4

A long old night for the striker. Was always going to be a tough task with creativity lacking for Hearts for long periods but he couldn't make anything stick even when the ball reached him. Best moments came when he had support from JJ Williams but by then the game was out of Hearts' reach. Not a major chance of his own to speak of.

Pierre Landry Kabore (for Guendouz, 54) 5

Quickly involved in smart interplay with Braga as he made an instant, albeit not telling, impact. Threw himself about and put in a shift defensively, too.

Matthew Gillies (for Kingsley, 63) 4

A tremendous opportunity for the teenager, who has been on loan at Stenhousemuir. Made a crucial interception and smart pass seconds after coming on.

JJ Williams (for McPake, 76) 2

On to spearhead the attack for the final 15 minutes but was largely anonymous in this cameo outing as he continues to search for a spark after arriving at Hearts.

James Wilson (for Kerjota, 76) 2

Another thrown on for the final period with the Thun lead looking insurmountable.
