Manchester United’s summer recruitment included four senior additions in the form Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, alongside academy signings Cristian Orozco, Tynan Thompson and goalkeeper Kit Margetson.
Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea, Karl Darlow joined on a free transfer from Leeds United, Youri Tielemans made the move from Aston Villa and Carlos Baleba signed from Brighton.
United also recruited Colombian youngster Cristian Orozco from Fortaleza, brought in goalkeeper Kit Margetson from Swansea City and secured Thompson from Tottenham.
Fifteen first-year scholars were also welcomed into the academy, including Kai Rooney, son of former United captain Wayne Rooney.
The club’s youth recruitment has taken place against a difficult start to the season for its Under-19s in Europe, following a 5-0 win over Sabah before defeats to Atletico Madrid and Como.
Thompson, meanwhile, arrived with a reputation built on his output for Tottenham, where he had progressed through the academy and earned opportunities around the senior squad.
The £4 million summer signing from Tottenham has now scored his first goal in a United shirt, opening the scoring in the Under-19s’ 1-1 UEFA Youth League draw against Roma at Leigh Sports Village.
The 18-year-old found the net in the 37th minute, finishing confidently after Bendito Mantato delivered an excellent cross from the right.
It was a moment of quality in an otherwise physical contest, with Roma making life difficult for Adam Lawrence’s side throughout the afternoon.
United looked on course to claim an important result before Antonio Arena converted a late penalty to rescue a point for the visitors.
The draw leaves the young Reds 20th in the league-phase standings, with the top 22 teams progressing to the play-offs.
Thompson’s first goal is an encouraging milestone after his move from north London in July.
Tottenham confirmed the transfer on 20 July, bringing an end to a spell in which he had progressed through their academy after joining at the age of 12.
He was included in Spurs’ first-team matchday squad on three occasions during the 2025/26 season.
Since arriving at Carrington, Tynan Thompson has featured for both the Under-19s and Under-21s.
His early Under-21 involvement has brought two assists in four appearances, while his Roma strike marks his first goal for the club.
United will hope the goal gives the young winger confidence as he continues adapting to life at Old Trafford, with the club clearly viewing him as an exciting prospect for the future.
