Michael Carrick’s side are at serious risk of reaching another major low point in Manchester United’s history if their winless streak at Old Trafford continues.
The Red Devils have lost six times and picked up three draws in their last nine matches across all competitions in the 2026-27 season under manager Michael Carrick.
Messi and Ronaldo RUINED the Ballon d'Or
Ron Atkinson was in the Old Trafford dugout and the Red Devils picked up four draws and two defeats in their final six matches in the 1983-84 season. Man Utd’s woes continued into the 1984-85 campaign after the Red Devils chalked up four consecutive draws under former United manager Ron Atkinson.
Based on the struggles in 1984, Atkinson’s men came out better than Carrick’s side for having four fewer defeats. The Red Devils were able to secure eight draws in their 10-match run across the 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons compared with Carrick’s three draws from nine fixtures.
Atkinson was able to avoid an 11-match winless streak after Man Utd bounced back with a statement win, as the Red Devils thrashed Newcastle in a 5-0 victory at Old Trafford in their First Division clash in September 1984. Atkinson’s side scored eight times in the 1984-85 campaign before their streak ended, while the Red Devils have currently netted only seven times in their last nine matches.
With the Red Devils’ momentum at an all-time low under Carrick this season, United’s November schedule intensifies with the Champions League test against Roma and the Premier League clash against Aston Villa next week. Both fixtures are pivotal moments for Man Utd ahead of the November international break.

Bryan Mbeumo is staying positive despite the defeat – do you share his optimism the players can turn it around?
The United matches against Roma and Aston Villa fall at Old Trafford — at a time when the Red Devils are underperforming at home. Carrick has suffered three defeats and one draw at Old Trafford in the last nine matches across all competitions. Atkinson’s run, on the other hand, had three draws and one loss at Old Trafford in their 10-match woes in 1984. It proved there was substance for Old Trafford to be the place where the winless run could be ended under Atkinson, while United fans can’t say the same now under Carrick.
Carrick’s home record could be the Achilles’ heel for the Red Devils and could lead to the under-pressure Man Utd boss equalling or surpassing Atkinson’s record. The Red Devils have scored three times in their last four matches at Old Trafford under Carrick, but Man Utd have conceded eight times to opposition teams. Meanwhile, Atkinson’s Red Devils side might have netted one time less than Carrick’s side in the same number of matches at Old Trafford, but United only conceded four times compared to the eight times in the 2026-27 run.
United’s 10-match winless run under Atkinson saw the Red Devils score only six times and had five different scorers. While Atkinson’s side mirrored Carrick’s men in similar ways, the 87-year-old former Man Utd manager did have Mark Hughes to fall back on as a forward. Mark Hughes scored twice during the winless streak before he netted against Newcastle in the 5-0 win at Old Trafford.
Carrick, on the other hand, has not had his main out-and-out forward option, Benjamin Sesko, available for the last nine matches. Joshua Zirkzee is his closest alternative to Benjamin Sesko and the Red Devils striker netted only once in United’s 4-1 defeat over Como in the Champions League clash last month.
