Frank Lampard has confirmed that Bobby Thomas is a doubt for the weekend as Coventry City prepare to take on Sunderland at the CBS Arena.
The centre-half has a “small” calf injury which is not as bad as first feared when he walked off early in the second half against Fulham last Saturday when he was replaced by youngster Stephen Mfuni.
The Manchester City loan defender is on standby to deputise for Thomas if he fails to fully recover in time to face the Black Cats, with Lampard admitting it will be a “good opportunity” for the teenager if called upon. The more experienced Joel Latibeaudiere is the only other option at the manager’s disposal given that Aurele Amenda is out until Christmas, also with a calf injury.
Asked for an update on Thomas, the City boss revealed at his pre-match press conference: “He’s got a small calf issue so it’s thankfully not as was feared in the beginning when you don’t know or you’re worried about that lower region of the leg, around the Achilles, but it’s a small calf problem.
“So we’re not sure about this weekend. We’ll see. We’ve got another 48 hours at the moment but yeah, the injury is hopefully not the a terrible one and we’ll see.”
Elsewhere, Lampard said that midfielder Josh Eccles is no closer to a return from his latest set-back, having suffered an ankle injury just after recovering from a calf strain, while there’s some positive news regarding striker Haji Wright who is back on the grass as he continues his recovery from a thigh strain.
“Haji is out on the grass, which is good news, just on his own doing some lighter work, which is great. So he’s progressing. But Josh is not out on the grass at this point.”
And finally, goalkeeper Oliver Dovin is recovering well from a shoulder injury that cut short his loan spell at Leyton Orient.
“He’s working towards going back. I haven’t got the absolute date for his return but he’s here working with us to then go back to them. It’s not a serious injury. We were concerned about it in the beginning but he’s making progress.”
