Earlier today, it was reported by PWInsider that there has been backstage chatter about Rey Mysterio potentially retiring in 2027.

Mysterio has continued to be a weekly part of WWE television, with him facing off against Dragon Lee and Chad Gable on this week’s episode of Raw.

With Rey’s retirement potentially on the horizon, here are some names we could see face him in his retirement match.

Dominik Mysterio

The most obvious choice to retire Rey ever since he made his debut in WWE back in 2020 is his own son, Dominik Mysterio.

Rey and Dominik have been feuding since Dominik first turned on his father back in 2022, and a big mask vs. hair match would be the perfect send off.

Whether he’s still a heel or his stance on his father has softened, Dominik being opposite his father during his final match would be the perfect book end.

Gunther

Prior to WrestleMania 42 this year, it was reported that a match between Rey Mysterio and Gunther was planned for the show, which ultimately didn’t end up happening after Rey suffered an injury.

Gunther has taken on the role of the Career Killer since he retired Goldberg in July 2025, going on to then retire John Cena and AJ Styles.

If Rey is set to retire next year, WWE will likely put Gunther in there with him.

Dragon Lee

It was recently reported that Dragon Lee had signed a new contract with WWE, set to keep him with the company for another five years.

Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio have been aligned on WWE television since Lee joined the LWO, with Lee being seen by many as the company’s future lucha star.

Rey putting over the next big lucha star in his retirement match would be a nice wrap up to his career.

Penta

After debuting in WWE in January 2025, Penta has exploded in WWE, with him now holding the Money In The Bank briefcase and seemingly set for a future run as World Champion.

If the timing adds up, WWE running Penta vs. Rey Mysterio for the World Championship in Mexico next year as Rey’s retirement would be a white hot atmosphere.
