Liverpool did not start well against Arsenal on Sunday, with the Reds looking nervy and frantic in the face of the Gunners’ control.
One of the biggest culprits was young Trey Nyoni, who was thrown into Liverpool’s midfield in what was a big call from Andoni Iraola.
Nyoni started like a young player desperate to make a point, biting into a couple of early tackles which left Arsenal players on the floor. Watching on for Sky Sports, Gary Neville noticed that Gunners manager Mikel Arteta was not too pleased with what he’d seen from the 19-year-old.

Bradley Barcola during warm ups
Bradley Barcola of Liverpool looks on during the warm up before the Premier League 2026/27 match between Liverpool FC and Arsenal FC at Anfield on November 01, 2026 in Liverpool, England.
After Nyoni outshone Ryan Gravenberch in the Carabao Cup win over Chelsea on Wednesday, there had been a feeling that Iraola could throw him in for the visit of Arsenal.
The youngster has looked ready during his early appearances this season, but he did appear a little out of his depth during the early exchanges against the Gunners.
One early foul on Martin Odegaard went unpunished when it could easily have been a booking on another day, before Nyoni steamed in late on Kai Havertz a few minutes later. According to Neville, Arteta was less than impressed.
“After getting away with the first one, he is a very lucky boy,” said the commentator.
“It isn’t as bad as the first one, but accumulatively it should mean it’s a yellow. He’s [Arteta] fuming. He’s right as well. The young boy’s got to calm down, someone’s got to get a grip of him.”
Nyoni did manage to ease up a little, but with the experience of Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes getting the better of the Liverpool midfield, the decision to throw the young man in will be scrutinised.
