Harlow football clubs invited to take part in Silent Support Weekend

CLUBS and leagues in Essex grassroots football are being invited to take part in the first Silent Support Weekend of the 2026/27 season on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November 2026, with new England Football findings highlighting the benefits of giving young players space to communicate, make decisions and enjoy their game.

Following the involvement of more than one million people in March’s national event, England Football are inviting even more clubs and leagues to support the November weekend. Guidance and promotional resources are now available to help everyone prepare and explain the initiative to coaches, parents, spectators and players.

New findings shared by England Football show that 97% of participants felt behaviour improved or stayed the same during the most recent Silent Support Weekend. Average good respect marks also increased from 91.1% to 92.1% within the leagues who took part, providing further encouragement for those considering getting involved.

The approach is straightforward: spectators are asked to remain silent on the sidelines apart from applauding good play, while coaches can offer quiet encouragement. Applause for both teams is welcome, with spectators avoiding shouted instructions, tactical advice and other comments from the touchline.

By reducing the number of competing voices around the pitch, children have more opportunities to talk to their teammates, solve problems and influence their own game without outside pressure or confusion. A calmer environment can also support young match officials and help everyone involved to focus on providing an enjoyable football experience.

The national findings complement encouraging feedback gathered by the Essex County FA’s Safeguarding Team following Silent Support Weekends during 2025/26. Clubs were invited to reflect on the impact on players, coaches and spectators, as well as sharing ideas about how future weekends could be developed.

When asked about their most valuable ‘takeaway’, responses included “players owning their game,” “created a calmer and more respectful environment” and “more communication between teammates.” These observations demonstrate how quieter touchlines can give young players greater ownership of their football.

Other feedback highlighted the effect which negative touchline behaviour can have, reinforcing the value of giving children space to play and make their own decisions. Youth leagues across Essex supported the March 2026 weekend, and the County FA are keen to build on that involvement throughout the new season.

Clubs are encouraged to speak to their league about taking part and to share the guidance with their football community. Explaining the approach in advance can help coaches, parents and spectators to understand their roles in creating a positive and respectful matchday environment. England Football’s resources are available to download through league and club resource packs, helping participants to promote the weekend and prepare for their fixtures.

Get involved on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th November and help young players to find their voice on the pitch. Further information, guidance and practical resources are available on England Football’s Silent Support Weekend web page, accessible via www.essexfa.com.
