The full route for the Tour de France’s historic visit to Liverpool in 2027 has today been revealed, as excitement builds towards the return of the world’s greatest cycle race to Britain.

Race organisers A.S.O. have confirmed the detailed route riders will take through Liverpool and the wider Liverpool City Region, putting the area at the heart of one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

The Liverpool leg will see the peloton race from the Cumbrian town of Keswick through Lancashire eventually travelling through the boroughs of Knowsley and St Helens, before finishing the stage in a super sprint along Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, giving residents and visitors the chance to see the world’s best riders racing on local roads.

The Tour de France will make only its fifth visit to Britain, beginning its three-week journey in Edinburgh on Friday, 2 July, with three stages taking riders through Scotland, north-west England and Wales.

Britain’s role in the 2027 male and female races was showcased during the official presentation at the Palais des Congrès in Paris today.

Taking place on Saturday, 3 July 2027, stage two of the men’s race is expected to draw huge crowds to the Liverpool City Region.

The Tour will present a huge multi-million-pound boost to the local tourism economy and will put a timely spotlight on the region’s active travel programme, which is delivering more than 600km of new cycling and walking routes.

The event is expected to provide a major opportunity to showcase the region to an international audience, building on its track record of hosting major cultural and sporting events.

The arrival of the Tour De France completes an impressive hattrick of global sporting events coming to the Liverpool city region over the next few years, with the UEFA EURO 2028 Championships to be hosted at Everton FC’s stadium and the city hosting the World Gymnastics Championships in 2030.

Mayor of the Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram said: “The Tour de France is one of the greatest sporting spectacles on the planet. For three weeks, millions of people around the world will be glued to the action, watching the best cyclists on earth push themselves to the absolute limit. And next summer, that spectacle is coming right to our doorstep.

“We’re a region that lives and breathes sport, and we know a thing or two about putting on a show. From the streets of St Helens and Huyton to the finish on our iconic waterfront, this is going to be a special moment for everyone who lives here, and a chance to be part of sporting history.

“I hope seeing these incredible athletes in action inspires a new generation to get on their bikes, give cycling a go and discover what they can achieve. The race might only be here for a day, but the impact it can have on our region could last for years.”

Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: “The Tour de France coming to Liverpool is a landmark moment for our city. From our waterfront and world-famous landmarks to our neighbourhoods and communities, billions of viewers around the world will see Liverpool at its very best.

“Securing a place on the Tour de France route is a huge vote of confidence in Liverpool and our ability to deliver world-class events on an international stage. This historic occasion will bring fantastic experiences and real opportunities for local people and businesses and will provide a significant boost to our economy.

“We look forward to welcoming riders, teams, and supporters from across the world for what promises to be an unforgettable occasion.”

Cllr Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, said: “We are delighted that the men’s 2027 Tour de France official route has now been officially announced.

“Knowsley will provide a spectacular backdrop along the route, with the historic town of Prescot, Shakespeare North Playhouse, Bowring Park and Huyton, showcasing the borough as the peloton heads through to Liverpool.

“The world-famous spectacle will be supported by a culture and legacy programme taking place across Knowsley, providing resident and visitors with lots of fun ways to get involved.”

Welcoming the route announcement, Councillor George Woodward, Leader of St Helens Borough Council, said: “As one of the biggest free sporting events on the planet, the Tour de France Grand Départ 2027 presents an exciting opportunity to showcase the very best of St Helens on the world stage.

“The route complements the borough’s natural beauty, passing through picturesque countryside while providing a real challenge for riders, who can be assured of a very special welcome and plenty of encouragement from residents and visitors along the way.

“We’re very much looking forward to hosting this spectacular event and being part of something the whole borough can get behind, creating a lasting legacy for years to come.”

The historic nature of the event was underlined by the fact that Britain will also become the first country outside France to host the start of both the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in the same year.

Intermediate sprint locations for the five British road stages have also been confirmed, with Newcastle and the Scottish Borders, Morecambe in Lancashire and Llandrindod Wells in Powys hosting sprints during the three stages of the men’s race.

Paul Bush, Managing Director, Grand Départ GB 2027, said: “To have both the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift starting in Britain next summer is extraordinary, and a historic moment. These routes showcase what a spectacular stage Scotland, England and Wales will provide.”

The 2027 Grands Départs will be accompanied by JOY, a dedicated social impact programme designed to ensure the benefits of hosting the Tours extend beyond the races themselves.

  • All six stages of the two Grands Départs will be broadcast live on free-to-air television in the UK on Five, alongside live coverage on TNT Sports, who will broadcast the entirety of the 2027 races.
