British 17-year-old Mika Stojsavljevic claimed her first WTA Tour win after defeating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin

British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic upset 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin for her first win on the main WTA Tour - despite only finding out she was playing an hour before.

The 17-year-old was given a spot as a lucky loser at the Hong Kong Open when Leylah Fernandez - runner-up to Emma Raudcanu at the 2021 US Open - withdrew.

Stojsavljevic, the world No 411, overcame a rankings gap of over 200 places as she beat Kenin 6-3 4-6 6-4 to set up a second-round meeting with Turkey's Zeynep Sönmez.

Stojsavljevic, who lost in the first round of qualifying in Hong Kong before her reprieve, said: "I only knew an hour before that I was going to be playing. I kind of just went out and swung. We didn't have much time to prepare.

"Obviously, I know she's a Grand Slam champion so it was never going to be an easy match but I believed in myself and it worked out."

Stojsavljevic lost her way from a set and 3-0 up against American Kenin but rebounded to win the deciding set in a match in which she struck six aces, six winners and converted six of 13 break points.

In 2024, the Londoner became the first Brit in 15 years to win the US Open girls' title, following Heather Watson's triumph back in 2009.

Stojsavljevic made her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Great Britain against Australia in Melbourne in April, defeating current world No 36 Talia Gibson in straight sets.

Elsewhere in Hong Kong on Wednesday, Stojsavljevic's compatriot Katie Boulter saw her season come to an end with a 7-5 6-4 defeat to American Claire Liu.

If Stojsavljevic is able to overcome Sönmez, she will play Liu in round three.

British No 1 Boulter had beaten Viktorija Golubic in straight sets in round one, despite an incident that "got under her skin".
