Doncaster Rovers (A): What Should Sheffield Wednesday Expect?
Sheffield Wednesday's Kop

Sheffield Wednesday look to bounce back against Doncaster Rovers after losing their second game of the season against Notts County.

Their first South Yorkshire derby of the season comes at the worst possible time for the Owls. After making light work of Wimbledon on Saturday, they lost 2-0 to County, a game in which they failed to have a single shot on target.

Now the pressure is on Henrik Pedersen to show he is the right man to lead this talented side to promotion this season.

We look ahead to what HP’s side should expect from the game against Doncaster Rovers, their recent form, key players and recent starting 11.

Doncaster Rovers’ Last Five Games

While Wednesday were losing to Notts County, Donny were beaten by Stockport County 2-0. That loss made it two defeats in a row and pushed them closer to the drop zone.

Last five League One results:

  • Doncaster Rovers 0-2 Stockport County
  • Leicester City 2-1 Doncaster Rovers
  • Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Burton Albion
  • Peterborough United 0-2 Doncaster Rovers
  • Wimbledon 1-0 Doncaster Rovers.

Last Donny Starting 11

According to Sofascore, Grant McCann lined his side up in a 3-4-2-1 against Stockport County on Tuesday night. That starting 11 consisted of:

Simkin; Grehan, Bryne, McGrath (Adelakun, 67); Ayinde (Clifton, 76), Gotts, Broadbent (Robinson, 76), McCann; Bailey, May (Hutchinson, 67); Hanlan (Keane, 62).

Rovers unused subs that came were Jake Oram and Lincoln Pawlak.

Doncaster Rovers Injury News

Speaking to Doncaster Free Press after their defeat to Stockport, McCann shared some news about players close to a return:

“Tommy O’Reilly and Jordan Thomas are both ill. But Jamie Sterry and Jack Senior have both trained the last few days. So we just want to build them up.

“I’d love them back because they’re the two best full backs in the league in my opinion. Let’s see, James Husband also ran today.”

Who Sheffield Wednesday Need to Watch Out for

While Donny are on a poor run, Wednesday likely won’t take that for granted as they’ve been caught out by both Wigan and Notts County this season.

There are several players Wednesday need to watch out for when they play Doncaster Rovers.

Top Performer

Midfielder Robbie Gotts has the highest average rating in the Donny side. The 26-year-old has an average Sofascore rating of 7.11 in his 10 games this season.

Gotts has been consistent for Rovers, only dropping below a seven rating twice this season in League One.

Goal Threats

Their leading scorer in the league is experienced forward Alfie May. The 33-year-old has scored three goals in 10 games and has an xG of 3.75.

He’s a constant threat in front of goal, leading the side in shots per match with 2.9 and shots on target per match with 0.9.

Creative Threats

Leading the side in assists is midfielder Bayley McCann with two. The 20-year-old has only started one of his seven appearances in the league but is someone the Owls will need to keep a close eye on if he features.

Other key creators in the Donny side include Gotts, who has created the most big chances (three) and May, who has averaged the most key passes per match (1.2).
