Florida football’s first season under Jon Sumrall has been anything but predictable.
The Gators have bounced in and out of the national rankings, beat Ole Miss and Texas, and suffered back-to-back losses to Missouri and South Carolina. That roller-coaster ride has been enough for USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg to include Florida among the nine biggest surprise teams in the Power Four this season.
"The Gators have been on the rollercoaster under new coach Jon Sumrall..." Myerberg wrote. "... While the Gators are very unpredictable and should lose this weekend to No. 3 Georgia, they could still be a three-loss playoff contender by beating Kentucky on the road next month."
Florida checks in at No. 20 in the US LBM Coaches Poll ahead of its rivalry matchup with Georgia, after starting the season unranked. The Gators climbed as high as No. 8 after beating Ole Miss, then fell out of the rankings after two straight losses. A 27-24 road win over Texas pushed Florida back into the rankings and kept its postseason ceiling considerably higher than it appeared only a few weeks earlier.
Myerberg described the Gators as “very unpredictable,” but noted that Florida still has a path to remain in the College Football Playoff conversation, even with another loss. A win over Georgia would make that discussion much more interesting.
Florida enters Saturday at 5-2 and still has Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee and Florida State remaining after Georgia. Kentucky, another team included on USA TODAY Sports' surprise list, currently leads the SEC at 7-1.
Sumrall’s first season has already taken several unexpected turns. With five regular-season games remaining, there is still plenty of room for a few more.
