Manchester City favourites to sign Borussia Dortmund star after formal approach

Manchester City are continuing to invest in young talent as they look to strengthen their squad for the future, with another exciting prospect emerging on their transfer radar.

Pep Guardiola’s side have reportedly moved into pole position for one of Borussia Dortmund’s most highly rated youngsters.

United States international Mathis Albert has attracted interest from several European clubs, but City are currently considered the favourites to secure his signature.

With the teenager’s first-team opportunities limited in Germany, the Premier League champions could look to take advantage of the situation.

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City are the frontrunners to sign Albert after making a formal approach during the summer transfer window.

The report claims City are prepared to offer the 17-year-old lucrative personal terms as they step up their pursuit. Their interest is serious, with the club previously prepared to meet a valuation in the region of €20 million (£16.7m).

Chelsea are also long-term admirers of the youngster and were reportedly willing to spend a similar amount last winter. Paris Saint-Germain previously made contact with Dortmund in 2025, while Arsenal and Liverpool have more recently been monitoring his situation.

However, City are currently viewed as being in the strongest position should Dortmund soften their stance.

Albert joined Borussia Dortmund from the LA Galaxy academy in 2024 and has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young American talents in European football. He has already made Bundesliga appearances and earned senior international recognition with the United States.

Despite his potential, opportunities under Niko Kovac have been limited this season. That lack of regular first-team football has encouraged several clubs to monitor his development, although Dortmund remain determined to keep hold of their young attacker.

The Bundesliga side have reportedly rejected approaches, including loan enquiries, and continue to view Albert as an important part of their long-term plans. They are also preparing a contract extension offer, with his current agreement running until June 2027.

There is another important factor for City. Premier League regulations prevent English clubs from signing Albert permanently until he turns 18 in May, meaning any potential transfer would be geared towards next summer rather than an immediate move.
