Alexander Zverev Replaces Jannik Sinner As ATP World No. 1 In Historic Rankings Shift

Alexander Zverev has become world No. 1 for the first time at 29, replacing Jannik Sinner in the ATP rankings. He is the oldest first-time No. 1 since 1974 and only the second German man to achieve the milestone.

Alexander Zverev Replaces Jannik Sinner As ATP World No. 1 In Historic Rankings Shift

Alexander Zverev has officially become the world No. 1 in men's tennis for the first time, making history as the oldest player in more than 50 years to reach the top of the ATP rankings for the first time. The 29-year-old German replaces Jannik Sinner at the summit in the rankings published on Monday, November 2, 2026.

Zverev's achievement makes him the 30th player to reach the top spot since the ATP rankings were introduced in 1973. At 29 years and six months, he is the second-oldest first-time world No. 1, behind Australia's John Newcombe, who was 30 when he reached the position in 1974.

The milestone also makes Zverev only the second German man to become world No. 1, joining tennis great Boris Becker, who first reached the summit on January 28, 1991.

How Alexander Zverev Secured the World No. 1 Ranking

Zverev guaranteed his rise to the top after defeating Tallon Griekspoor 6-4, 7-5 at the Vienna Open on October 29. The victory secured his place in the quarter-finals and ensured he would overtake Sinner when the next ATP rankings were released.

Although Zverev subsequently lost his Vienna semi-final to Australia's Alex de Minaur, the defeat did not affect his position in the rankings.

Speaking after securing the milestone, Zverev described reaching the top as a special feeling, saying it was different from winning a tournament or a title. He also expressed his gratitude for achieving a career goal he had pursued for years.

Two Grand Slam Titles Power Zverev's Historic Rise

Zverev's rise to world No. 1 follows the most successful season of his career. The German won his first two Grand Slam titles in 2026, lifting the French Open trophy at Roland Garros in June before defeating Ben Shelton in the US Open final in September.

He also reached the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Sinner, and made it to the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The season's results helped Zverev secure the year-end No. 1 ranking even before he officially overtook Sinner in the weekly standings. He entered November with a 65-17 record for the year, underlining his consistency across the major tournaments.

Jannik Sinner Drops to No. 2 as Rafael Jodar Enters Top 10

Sinner, who had held the top ranking since April 13, drops to second after ending his season early because of inflammation in his right knee. Carlos Alcaraz moves into third place.

Another notable development in the latest rankings is the rise of 20-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar into the top 10. He achieved the milestone just 287 days after making his ATP Tour debut, setting a new record for the fastest climb from Tour debut to the top 10. Zverev now heads into the Paris Masters as the top-ranked player in men's tennis, beginning a new chapter in his career alongside some of the sport's most celebrated No. 1 players.
