Rangers U19s grab late lifeline in Dynamo Kyiv defeat

The young Rangers side were beaten 3-2 in the first leg of their domestic champions path second-round tie, but Coben Fergusson’s late strike ensured they remain firmly in contention ahead of next week’s return in Scotland.

Rangers were able to call upon Queen’s Park loanees Lewis Stewart and Aiden McCallion through the loan co-operation agreement, while Alloa Athletic pair Kyle Glasgow and Max Cameron were also involved.

But the visitors found themselves behind after just three minutes when Pavlo Liusin’s long-range effort took a wicked deflection off Corey Ngwenya and looped beyond Rydnn McGuire.

Rangers passed up opportunities to draw level before being punished again in first-half stoppage time as Arsenii Fedorenko raced beyond the defence and finished past McGuire.

They responded after the break and Glasgow eventually dragged Rangers back into the contest with 15 minutes remaining.

The midfielder caught the Dynamo goalkeeper in possession inside his own six-yard box before slotting into the empty net.

However, Rangers’ momentum lasted only a matter of moments as Yaroslav Buravtsov broke clear straight from the restart and restored Dynamo’s two-goal advantage.

That could have left Rangers facing a daunting task back in Scotland, but Fergusson ensured they would return home with genuine hope.

Cameron Fernie’s stoppage-time effort was parried into the six-yard box and Fergusson reacted quickest to hammer home the rebound and make it 3-2.

The late goal leaves the tie finely poised ahead of next week’s decisive second leg in Scotland.
