Manchester United have seemingly made a decision over Michael Carrick's future as a five-man shortlist has emerged. The Red Devils were well beaten on Wednesday evening in the Champions League by Como 1907.
And the chastening defeat was followed by Bruno Fernandes openly questioning Carrick's tactics - just over one week after Lisandro Martinez's bombshell interview. However, according to the BBC, Carrick is carrying on as normal and is not aware of any imminent change.
United's players had already been granted Thursday off, while the Red Devils are yet to confirm the plans for Friday's planned press conference ahead of their Bournemouth clash.
However, the BBC add that senior figures at United view the constant rotation of managers as one of the reasons that the Red Devils are continuing to decline.
There is also an appreciation by some that he made progress last season, and they hold the view that he should be given more time to turn things around.
If Carrick is to face the sack however, a five man shortlist has emerged. Eddie Howe is one of those names under consideration, with reports suggesting the former Newcastle boss is open to taking charge of United after leaving St James' Park over the summer.
While Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and ex-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, who are both out of work, are also understood to be interested in the role.
Aston Villa's Unai Emery and Brighton's Fabian Hurzeler are highly regarded by United's hierarchy, but luring either away from their current clubs would prove difficult.
Carrick was quick to criticise his team's performance, while acknowledging that responsibility ultimately falls on his shoulders.
"We might win, we might lose, but the way we went about it tonight, I wouldn't say everyone, but the way we went about it in some ways tonight wasn't acceptable.
"And I just wanted to let the fans know that I feel for them, for sure," he said. It wasn't just the goals, if I'm totally honest. It was the manner and the way we played at times, in the way we went about it, that was the difficult thing to watch for me.
"It's not about playing for me, it's about playing for this football club. It's the responsibility that comes with being in the position; I'm responsible for the football club and the supporters.
"I'm giving my best, absolute best all the time, I care about it. My whole life's wrapped around it. I genuinely give everything that I possibly can."
