Manvir Singh struck in the 85th minute to help Mohun Bagan Super Giant secure a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC in an ISL fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.
Bagan started brightly, with Manvir and Scottish forward Lee Erwin leading the early attacking moves. But the host soon lost momentum, allowing Chennaiyin to take control and launch repeated forays into the final third.
Playmaker Madih Talal orchestrated the visitor’s moves, but Brison Fernandes, Irfan Yadwad and Namgyal Bhutia failed to convert the opportunities that came before the break.
Bagan’s attacking rhythm was affected by the absence of Jamie Maclaren, Miguel Figuera and Apuia, all out through injury.
Coach Panagiotis Dilmperis’ midfield reshuffle, particularly his attempt to find the right position for Lallianzuala Chhangte, further disrupted the plans. A return to a more familiar approach in the final quarter helped restore some cohesion.
Chennaiyin continued to threaten after the break, with Brazilian striker Ramon Tanque adding impetus to its attacks. Tanque had a promising opportunity in the 61st minute after being set up by Talal, but goalkeeper Vishal Kaith produced a crucial save.
CFC came closer in the 77th minute when Nikola Stojanovic’s swerving left-footed effort struck the crossbar following a timely touch from Kaith.
Chennaiyin paid dear for its missed chances when substitute Liston Colaco delivered a precise cross from the left. Manvir redirected the ball into the net to seal the victory.
The result: Mohun Bagan SG 1 (Manvir Singh 85) bt Chennaiyin FC 0.
