Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was the quickest man on Friday after topping both practice sessions at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The Monégasque led the way in the second session from McLaren's Lando Norris in second by 0.103 seconds.
George Russell was back in the Mercedes after rookie Frederik Vesti stepped in for the first session, and finished in third.
His teammate Kimi Antonelli, who is in prime position to wrap up the title this weekend, was down in fourth, two-tenths off the leader's pace.
Red Bull's Max Verstappen rounded out the top five.
Antonelli will be able to wrap up the drivers' title and become the youngest driver to do so if he finishes Sunday's race ninth or higher.
Hamilton's involvement in the second running ended just under halfway through as the seven-time world champion's Ferrari came to a halt down the pit straight.
"I've lost all power," Hamilton said over the team radio, before hopping out of his stricken car and getting a lift from a motorbike back to the paddock.
The Scuderia are expected to be strong here at the high-altitude Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, as evidenced by Leclerc's pace in both sessions.

There was a rare instance of drivers making contact in practice as Verstappen and Liam Lawson came together through the stadium section. The pair have been given a one-place grid penalty as a result.
The four-time world champion pushed through on the inside of Turn 12, but his former teammate Lawson came back at Turn 14 as the pair made contact and Verstappen was forced to leave the track.
"He literally drove into me," Lawson claimed, before the session was briefly red-flagged due to damage from the incident.
Home hero Sergio Pérez was another affected by illness on Friday but took to the track in front of his adoring fans, ending the day 18th for Cadillac, before being excused from post-practice media duties.
