Young forward to potentially miss two upcoming Sheffield Wednesday games - but for a good reason

Your latest Owls news...

Will Grainger has celebrated a good week with more international recognition.

The 17-year-old, who signed a new three-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, started the week with two goals for the under-18s in a 6-0 thrashing against Gateshead in the FA Youth Cup first round tie at Hillsborough on Monday. New Owls boss Dave Challinor was in the stands watching and Grainger may have given him something to think about ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup game at Oldham Athletic.

Grainger has only made four first-team appearances this season, the last of which came in the latter stages of Henrik Pedersen’s final match in charge against Doncaster Rovers. His other outings came at Salford City in the EFL Trophy and against Bolton and Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

Despite his limited game-time, Grainger has once again been called-up by Wales’ under-19s for their European Championship qualifiers against Finland (November 11), Spain (November 14) and Iceland (November 17), which all take place at Newport County’s Rodney Parade ground.

It means that Grainger will be unavailable for The Owls’ EFL Trophy clash against Accrington Stanley (November 11) and for Plymouth Argyle’s visit to Hillsborough (November 14). However, the latter fixture could be postponed due to international call-ups. Clubs can request a postponement if they have three or more players on international duty.

Although Wednesday have already had four players called-up for their countries, only Kieran Morrison counts towards the three, because Grainger, Jordi Liongola and Sean Fusire have not played enough minutes for Wednesday this season. Yan Valery and Harry Gray could yet be called-up and, if so, that would put the Plymouth fixture in doubt. However, Challinor spoke with some optimism about it going ahead when speaking to the media on Thursday.

He said: “There's still, I suppose, a little bit of uncertainty around the Plymouth fixture, but at the minute that looks like going ahead. At the moment, that's where we're at. We'll learn more today, and we'll learn more over the weekend. Because even within the squads that have been picked, if there are players that are on standby lists, if someone picks up an injury and drops out, then they might well be called-up up. So, at the minute, we're preparing and we're prepared in terms of our schedule for next week, that the game will go ahead on Saturday.”
