Police arrested professional boxer Edgar Berlanga for allegedly pistol-whipping the mother of his child on Oct. 18.
Police claim that a heated argument between Berlanga and his child's mother turned violent as they drove through Polk County, Florida, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. Berlanga was arrested for aggravated battery after allegedly slapping the woman before striking her in the head with a pistol.
The police report alleges that the woman attempted to jump out of the vehicle, but Berlanga grabbed her arm in an attempt to keep her in the car until she eventually managed to break free, according to TMZ.
The woman reportedly ran to a nearby 7-Eleven, where bystanders called for police assistance. The alleged victim spoke with police when they arrived on-scene, but said she did not wish to press charges.
Police reported observing swelling and bruising on her forehead that they believed was consistent with her account of the alleged attack and proceeded to press charges related to domestic violence, according to TMZ.
Authorities asked whether the firearm was real, and she reportedly confirmed that it was a real weapon, and disclosed that she and Belrlanga had been at a gun range 20 minutes before the alleged incident unfolded.
Berlanga was booked and processed the Pasco County jail on two domestic violence offenses - felony aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery touch/strike.
Berlanga boasts a 24-2 professional boxing record, including 19 knockouts. He suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in a Sept. 2024 super middleweight title fight and is currently signed to Dana White's Zuffa Boxing. He also headlined a July event at Madison Square Garden, where he knocked out Steven Butler in the seventh round.
