Tottenham Hotspur secured their second win of the Premier League season by beating Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
It was a memorable victory for Spurs, who have largely faced embarrassment at Stamford Bridge over the years. The Blues’ stand-in goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently punched a cross from a Mateus Fernandes corner into his own net, handing Roberto De Zerbi’s side the lead in the 77th minute.
Three minutes later, Cole Palmer was given his marching orders after the English playmaker picked up two bookings. Tottenham made their numerical advantage count, as Mathys Tel scored a brilliant solo goal in the 87th minute to seal the deal. It was only Spurs’ second victory at Chelsea’s home in the Premier League era.
Tottenham had a dismal start to their season in the Premier League, which raised eyebrows as it came on the back of a major squad rebuild in the summer. However, Roberto De Zerbi and Co. have started to turn things around, securing back-to-back wins.
The victories over Coventry City and Chelsea have helped the Lilywhites climb up the Premier League table from the relegation zone, easing some of the pressure on De Zerbi. Former England goalkeeper Rob Green feels the 2-0 win at Chelsea can “galvanise” De Zerbi’s side and help them rediscover their form.
“Results like this galvanise a side,” Rob Green said on BBC Radio 5 Live (h/t BBC Sport).
“When you look at the players coming back, yes [James] Maddison got injured, and he’ll be a question mark over the next few weeks, but players coming back, momentum coming back – you feel, and say it quietly, Tottenham might just be coming back.”
Indeed, for the first time this season, Tottenham can begin to look upwards in the Premier League table. Despite showing quality in most of their games this season but failing to pick up results, the North London club finally appear to have gathered some momentum. Things quickly change in football, and two consecutive wins has lifted the spirits of the entire group.
With the momentum we have got, there is no reason why De Zerbi’s white army cannot beat a struggling Crystal Palace side at home at the weekend and make it three wins on the bounce. Keeping players fresh and fit will be key in building further momentum.
