Commanders LB K'Lavon Chaisson reacts to questionable fourth-quarter penalty

The Washington Commanders appeared to have put the Philadelphia Eagles away in the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s game when cornerback Trey Amos intercepted Tanner McKee deep in Philadelphia territory. Up 16-10 midway through the fourth quarter, the Commanders would’ve taken over at the Eagles’ 29-yard line. Washington would’ve begun the drive already in field-goal range, and another field goal would’ve made it a two-possession game at that point.

But, as Washington fans know all too well, you should probably be on the lookout for a flag after every big play. Sure enough, there was a flag. Officials called Washington linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson for roughing the passer, wiping out the interception and giving the Eagles a first down.

Judge for yourself.

This is the second time this season that officials have taken an interception off the board in the fourth quarter for Washington. It happened in the fourth quarter of the Week 5 tie against the Giants. Amik Robertson picked off Jameis Winston with the Commanders up by two touchdowns. The call was overturned because of a weak pass-interference call on Robertson, and the Giants scored on the next play.

Washington has also had multiple touchdowns taken off the board due to penalties, some legitimate, others not so much.

So, it’s no surprise that Chaisson wasn’t happy with the officials over that potential game-changing penalty.

“Obviously, we gotta be careful how we speak on that, but, I mean, some of those calls are questionable,” Chaisson. “I gotta do better; I can’t put my team in harm’s way for sure, but obviously with stakes being what it is tonight, the Sunday night game, the referees been under a lot of scrutiny, with the calls they’ve made throughout the year. So, I know they’re trying to do their part and protect the game, and make sure they play it both sides fair. With grace give it to them.”

When Chaisson was asked the question, the look in his eyes told the story. He didn’t need to say anything. Everyone speaking to him understood, too.

Chaisson played an outstanding game. He was in McKee’s face all night and finished with one sack. And, though he was frustrated, he handled the question about officiating as well as anyone could hope to.
