Former undisputed heavyweight world champion Oleksandr Usyk (25-0, 16 KOs) is considering a return to cruiserweight to fight American David Benavidez (32-0, 25 KOs), journalist Mike Coppinger reported on Oct. 30, citing Usyk's manager, Serhii Lapin, who told The Ring about the plans.
Benavidez, 29, nicknamed "the Mexican Monster," remains unbeaten as a professional. The American previously held a super middleweight world title twice before moving up to light heavyweight.
In August 2026, he made his cruiserweight debut, beating Cuba's Yunier Dortícos and winning the WBA and WBO championship belts.
A possible fight with Benavidez is being considered as one option for continuing Usyk's career in 2027.
Benavidez will fight on Dec. 5 in Phoenix, Arizona. He will face WBC world champion Michał Cieślak.
On May 23 in Giza, Egypt, Usyk fought kickboxer Rico Verhoeven. The Ukrainian won by technical knockout one second before the end of the 11th round and defended his WBC world title.
On June 26, Usyk gave up all his heavyweight championship belts, those of the IBF, WBC and WBA.
Deontay Wilder was previously named as one of the likeliest next opponents for the Ukrainian. But reports emerged that negotiations had reached a dead end.
